But yeah, I think there'd be a few eyebrows raised if suddenly some no-talent hack of a software developer suddenly puts out a graphics engine that rivals HL2's capabilities.
    ValuSoft comes to mind... rofl

Thats very helpfull, what they should do now is DELETE it, and tell Valve where they got it.

Looks like to me that it was not any company that stole it. I mean think about it; why release the code to the public when you can use it yourself. The only reason they would release it is so when they use it they can say they got the code from websites instead of actually hacking it. It was most likely some fag who thought he was cool to ruin 5 years worth of work. I reminds of people that steal cars. I have no respect for either :O.

Hi we're VALVe, we like to connect the machine that has hl2's sourcecode on it to the internet. Also, we like to use hotmail to check our e-mails and hire a blind kid with arthritis to supervise security. Oh and by the way, we absolutely love asking the community for help when our dicks are on fire and not ask the community for any input on the stupid black shit we added to counter-strike.

Finally, we love to make obscene amounts of money on the 19 planned "versions" of hl2.

                    ---

Flaming aside, i do feel sorry for them but how the let any access to the source-code POSSIBLE via internet is just beyond me. Wow.

Only person to blame is the Valve network security admin. If he had been updating patches and paying attention, this might not have happened. I dont see how you can blame microsoft outlook, considering there was a patch to fix that MONTHS ago.

I think Valve isn't the only one using the HL2 source-code, they have to work closely with Video-card companies and microsoft too if they are working on porting HL2 to the X-box.

it wouldn't make much sense to send the other companies a CD every-time an updat happens. they probably get it through a "secure" (well not exactle secure) connection through the internet.

why would asshole give up stolen code that they could profit from?

                          btw, u know whats funneh?

the source code was copied on 9/19, BEFORE HL2 was delayed

I give them no sympathy what-so-ever. If they want to make us use a program that contains lots of spyware (look through the code, you'll find it), this stuff is going to happen to them. Its their own fault their servers got hacked and their files downloaded. Heck, they prolly coded the firewall they use themselves, because they produce such buggy software, it wouldn't even take a team of chimps with computers to hack them, just 1 chimp.

Nothing like watching everyone go from "omg valve sux! blah blah blah" to "oh man... I feel sorry for valve... yadda yadda yadda..." Do I sense a bit of mixed emotions?

It makes sense that the thief may have posted only portions of the code -- the parts of the code that are valuable to software company competitors and those that are valuable to cheat makers are very different.

The thief must also have realized, however, that if they obtained the netcode for the engine and were intending to use it to make cheats then Valve would almost certainly act to correct the problem before the official release.

So, it is unlikely that their intention was to simply write cheats as nighthawk has elaborated on from a more technical perspective. It is much more likely that they were motivated by profit and entered into an agreement with another group wishing to acquire the intellectual content of the material for their own benefit. Worse, depending on what they leaked, they could have simply been instructed to release the code to derail Valve's efforts at FPS dominance in the future. From all perspectives it seems like an unfortunate situation for Valve.

I think it is still a little bit strange that Gabe Newell would write the note that he did. I have seen several computer security breaches around where I am employed and usually there is little chance that an appeal to the community will produce the desired result. Furthermore, Newell must realize that the damage is done, and Valve's efforts are best spent in identifying and remedying the mass of problems which will result from the leak of sensitive corporate material. In this light, it may benefit society that the perpetrators are caught and punished, but it will do no good to Valve.

I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
