Hi we're VALVe, we like to connect the machine that has hl2's sourcecode on it to the internet. Also, we like to use hotmail to check our e-mails and hire a blind kid with arthritis to supervise security. Oh and by the way, we absolutely love asking the community for help when our dicks are on fire and not ask the community for any input on the stupid black shit we added to counter-strike.

Finally, we love to make obscene amounts of money on the 19 planned "versions" of hl2.

    ---

Flaming aside, i do feel sorry for them but how the let any access to the source-code POSSIBLE via internet is just beyond me. Wow.
You obviously didn't read NightHawk's essay.......

At Valve, they would need to have a computer network.

On some of these computers they would have the source code.

This code is not directly accessible from the internet.

If you can get access to one of the machines on the network, you can get the code using the network.

One of the machines on the network that can access the internet was utilised to steal the code from another machine on the network.

If they only had the source code on a machine in a locked room with no network connections then I suppose the code would be secure.

But you can't exactly make a game like that can you einstein.

In this light, it may benefit society that the perpetrators are caught and punished, but it will do no good to Valve.
But valve can have fun with the perpetrators. After all, valve is full of programmers, and i'm sure they could screw them over if they felt like it........

Factor in that also D3, which is scheduled for release at about the same time as HL2, is also supposed to be a ground-breaking game with similar graphical and game characteristics. The HL2 source code would be immensly valuable to them to know where HL2 stands compared to their progress, would also allow them to perhaps seee some flaws in the code, allowing for the fact that it wasn't finished, and cover similar problems in their code or do any number of things.
      Are you completely NUTS??!?!?!!

ID has made their presentations of D3 at least a full year before the announcement of HL2 even existed. Reporters have played the demo dating back from 2002, when it was playable. The engine for D3 is COMPLETELY different and it is done. What hasnt been done are the levels.

Before making suspicious and utterly STUPID comments (I cannot mark my words enough) on ID, you better think seven times about what you are posting (make that: dont post at all).

Its their own fault their servers got hacked and their files downloaded.
I've never agreed with pretty much anything lopinboy has written before, but this just confirms it.

        You, sir, are an idiot.

Why don't we all make a similar statement?

Looks like pretty much nobody decided to actually stop posting stupid crap. Oh well. :-\

I love morons who know nothing about networks and programming turned experts overnight. It's fucking hilarious.

This whole situation is just more proof that if a security adversary is knowledgeable and dedicated it is almost impossible to stop them. From the text of Newell's note it sounds as though the attacker disguised and distracted from their exploits by first laying down a pattern of DoS and other basic script-kiddie attacks.

As for having sympathy for Valve, I don't really understand why you are talking about that at all. It is bad for them. But considering the popularity that HL2 enjoys before its even been created, it hardly seems surprising that teams of crackers would try to do this. Sympathy has nothing to do with it. Here's what is happening here: We work and live in a society entirely dependent on profoundly complex technologies. Our ideas, embodied in our work (in this case Valve's masterpiece of engineering), can be copied, transmitted, and shared by anyone in the world. In information technology, as in life, locks are made to keep honest people out. And HL2 attracted some very dishonest, very dedicated people. That is too bad but life is gonna go on.

I would hardly call that 'rolling' Nighthawk.

If anything, Nighthawk rolled everyone, because with his gargantuan post he proved that unlike a lot of us, he has some intelligence.

Ok, so first off, tell me how it wasn't their fault? They are a company, who most likely has network admins sitting their, getting paid to protect the servers from such an attack. If they MONITORED their network status correctly, then it wouldn't of happened.

Next, rape and hacking are 2 different things. You can not even start putting them into the same sentence, thus, you sir are the true idiot. Way to be a VALVe Fanboy.

You guys are saying how much of a problem it would be to have the source code not on a pc connected to the internet. Well do you think they will be keeping their code on pc's connected to the internet from here on? It's not that much of a problem. What would be worse, buying some more pc's or having your code leaked? I doubt it is sabotage from another company that wants to sell more because a code leak won't hurt the sales. If anything steam will be the best thing to prevent any cheats that arise from this. Which is really the only thing we have to be concearned about, besides maybe another dealy but I doubt that will happen since they gave us such a unspecific 2nd release date.
