No, that's not a legit theory. It is the HL-2 source, and it's not in VALVe's interests for the source code to their franchise engine, the one they've spent the last five years creating, to be available to the public.



Think about what you're suggesting, for fuck's sake...a publicly available alpha and publicly available source are two very different things, and while leaking an alpha—ie compiled binaries—could plausibly be a publicity stunt if you have a penchant for conspiracy theories, there's no way any company would voluntarily release the source of something like HL-2, certainly not until it was well past its money-making date. Like in 2010.

this way, it's not voluntary. i'm not saying that's what happened or anything, i'm just saying "what if?" - money making date? you could make more money suing the people who used the "leaked" source as it were then you would from people buying the game. (note the could)

Well, when I said voluntary I meant of their own free will. Regardless of what they told the community, they would still be knowingly allowing anyone and everyone to access their code...

All u guys say that Valve is dumb for having the source code even close to the internet, but think about it, its almost inpossible to not have it close. They probably have it stored on one machine which is networked to all the users computers who edit the source etc. and those users need the internet to check their mail. So unless they had like seperate computers on there own network that you had to go to, to edit the source. Only other logical way would be to have it on like a CD-RW and u could edit and save it on to the disc, but thats not very logical. I bet by 2marrow if not sooner it will be on every warez and or bit torrent site out there. GL Valve.

Think about this. It's not the complete source code, because HL2 isn't complete yet. You can compile it but can't do anything with it. You can't understand it unless you are able to code (which most of the people here can't do). If it's on all the warez and BT sites, most people can't do ANYTHING AT ALL with it.

Check the janitors. I knew a friend who knew a hacker (not a cracker like what happened to valve) who slipped between the lines simply because the janitors got overlooked. He's never held a formal job as a programmer, so he wasn't counted as someone who could've done the hacking. (All he did was put '...was here' in the system.) He just signed on as a janitor, worked a few months, did the hacking, worked a few more months (it was good pay) and left. They never caught him, which is why I didn't mention his name.



Anyway, just trying to help out.

This does not effect cheats really, most hacks are based on openGL not CS source code.



They will stick just hack into the graphics reprenstations and change what comes to your screen.

its not about running the game on hard source, its ALL about the variables inside the code that is what hackers look for. Cheats, hacks, aimbots will be ahellavalot harder to get rid of now that pople have access to the hardcode of the game. So the inner workings of a hack can be intergrated into the source engine more tightly making the cheats more intelligent and harder to get rid of.

Yes but with the use of steam there will still be no cheats, even is someone makes sense of the source and makes a cheat all valve has to do is change that part of the source and release the update on steam.

There really isn't any reason for anyone to use the source other than to make mods. And really if anyone does that they can be sued for copyright infringement.

The only way this turns out to be bad for us is that hl2 may take even longer to be released. Hell valve could end up making money off of this from suing people!

How can any of us possibly help when valve apparently has:



- logs of the person accessing the email server when Gabe was away

- logs of the person accessing webmail server

- if they think it was via email exploit, just check all email from now till beginning of sept? then again a company who leaves important info on an internet-accessible computer running outlook *EXPRESS* probably doesn't have the presence of mind to save such things.



But by all logic they should have the IP of the server where the hacking originated (or at least the nearest hop) as well as the mail server that originated the virulent email. The odds of somebody in the community having more info that that is ridiculously low.



Lets hope they learn their lesson and install mozilla/eudora/something else.
