Lets imagine some even more sensitive government and corporate networks: Imagine if the plans for a major Lockheed Martin radar system were to leak out through some combined attack. A few "Axis-Of-Evil" (TM) electrical engineers could quickly determine the best jamming strategies. I wonder if that's happening under our noses? Probably not.
In all likelyhood, Lockeed Martin knows how to ensure the utmost security and perhaps they could teach us all a thing or two about it. Having said that, I doubt that many game companies can afford to maintain similar standards. Perhaps, lopinboy, you would like to absorb the cost of such security measures in the next release of HL2 or D3? Probably not.
Having said that, there are people at most software companies who are paid to watch the network and the crackers won this time -- perhaps they were fanatically dedicated or had vast resources at their disposal? Who can tell?

p.s. To those who think this is just about computer security, I think its a larger problem than that. There have also been rumors that social engineering type hacks have been perpetrated against Valve in the past, so the problem is likely more complex than can be admitted.Comment

He had "inteligent" in quotes, implying the connotation that the person he was insulting would be one of those people who would say "boy im inteligent." Then, you also have to add in the chance of internal working sources.
It seems they would rather look at what employee is looking at porn instead of looking to see if their network is being overloaded, hacked, or such forth.Comment

Also, this isn't like its completely rare, on a similar note, most games get leaked before they're released so it was only a matter of time, as far as anything delaying hl2, very doubtful~
For example, SOFII was leaked while in Beta (I know this because I worked closely within several gaming websites and corresponded with the company as chief editor) and it was absolutely not such a big crisis. The difference is in this situation someone, more than likely who had access already, was the probable cause of leak. As it stands, usually these jobs aren't for malicious intent, but for other reasons, some we may never know~
Don't freak, it's not even worth wasting a poll on imo, btw, how come there's no option to vote 'Nothing to worry about will happen' on the poll? There should always be an option as in Yes or No or Maybe for a poll, guess I won't vote this week (who cares, right?)
I do think, for people who care or have something to prove, they may work on some pre-release cheats, but there won't be any more of a problem than there always is with online gaming. Whether its a week before or a week after, if someone wants it bad enough you can't stop teh h4x!Comment

I forgot to add one thing, no one will modify with hopes of release and market HL2, especially the leaked src because that's just stupid...
Second, no one would use it for their own game unless they were planning to rip off hl2, see above.
It might give inspiration and ideas, but that's about all they can really benefit from without unwanted exposure...
I read somewhere about bashing Outlook, lol...companies I have worked for in all sorts of fields from law enforcement and investigations to million-dollar non-profit organizations (I know because I worked for one) use it and appreciate it, at home and the office. A few years ago (not sure about now) Eudora was also pretty popular, but Outlook was used as well. It's a handy app for the user who needs a little more than their typical yahoo email addy~Comment
