Now I've always stood agenst Steam, but this is just sad. The simplest idea behind steam was to save massive patching. Yet the full installed (for people that play many mods like myself ) is 3/4 of a gig?!? I know there is a smaller just CS download, but it was my understanding that this was supposed to help lowband users... (yes, I know in the long run it will what with streaming updates, but if you can't get the client, it doesnt matter much)
This damn system is a wolf in sheep skin, once they get it locked in, pay-2-play HL wont be too far off....Comment

Let's see.. Steam is cool and works fine... friends list works fine.. even though I have 1 person on it and don't really talk to the guy.. so I figure I'll just delete him.. I've never been in a clan.. even if I 10 clan members aces in a server all by myself they would never invite me.. so how do people go about getting in clans if they are not looking for skill or anything? Do i just have to know a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy that knows the friend of a girl that is with a guy that know the guy that runs the server from some other guys backyard? 1.6 is better than 1.5 and Steam is better than WON.. so there!!Comment

The reason it's called the "full" installer is because there is also a "not-full" installer, which is about a megabyte. You get that, and you download the very minimum you require to play your game of choice.

The 750MB beast contains the precached files for HL and all of VALVe's derivative games and mods. It's not required to use Steam.Comment

Infact youve most likely downloaded more than that anyway from the various mods you have accumulated over the years, and do remember in a while your 1.1.1.0 installation will be useless.Comment

Look I'm not trying to fight you all on this, I'm simply putting forth some ideas. But as for whats-his-name up there suggesting that simply saying I'm gay would be easier... Pay-2-Play HL is something I don't see being very far off. They are forcing a user identification client onto us, and I'm sure before long it'll be nice and secure, and just like a number of other games no one though would ever be pay-2-play *cough*RO*cough* it will join the mass leagues of games that are now about 9.99$ a month...Comment

just because Steams seems to be made in such a way that it's EASY to make it pay-to-play, doesn't mean it'll go that way. the only games that are using that scheme are MMORPGs and such, not first person shooters. sure, it *could* happen, but chances of that are as big as those of a meteor falling on my house right now as i type this, preventing me from posting this message.
see? i'm still alive and typing.
my point being that just because something *could* be done (and very easily) to make HL2 and whatnot pay-to-play, it won't happen. so until u get some proof or ANYTHING except personal 'feelings' to base your accusations on, please keep 'em just that - personal.
it's like Bush. he *could* press a button and destroy the whole world with nukes, killing everyone on it including himself... but just because it's as easy as a press of a button, it doesn't mean he'll do it (hmm... bad example? :P ).
