Once all the rush stops Steam is a VERY nice program, it downloads games very fast and there is never any wait. You people are just seeing the bad side of Steam, i'll admit that if Valve does plan to release a real game the people are going to pay for over Steam then they to get massive amounts of bandwidth so people that paid have to wait in line because that would be suicide for Valve. Overall the experience getting a game for free off Steam has been just as i expected, absolutely horrid. I am sure that when HL2 comes out and 50,000 people try and buy it over Steam in the first 24Hrs Valve will have enough bandwidth to handle it because they care about paying customers. They don't really give a shit how slow you get the software for free, in fact its not really free, Valve is paying a lot for bandwidth so you can download Counter-Strike when all you have paid them is a measly 40$ 3 years ago. Be happy you get anything even if you're getting it slower then a 56k can upload :P

I agree, steam BETA was like this when it first was released, but after everyone got it and there was less strain on the servers, it was smooth sailing. Steam is an excellent program. Only thing I personally think Valve could have done different is to have shut the beta down, and not said anything about when the final was gonna be released. They should have got it up and running, and then sent out a release that it was released, there would have been much less headache for everyone that way.

I have a question with joining a game of CS. I can join any server that is empty, however if I try and join a server with people in it i get this disconnect message,

"You have been disconnected from the server. Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID Ticket (server was unable to contact the authentication server, 27)."

Does anyone know what this means? What should I do?

hey, don't start flaming me, it's just a funny pic and it *is* true. i actually like Steam myself so don't start telling me why it doesn't suck... it's just under a lot of stress right now, but it should be working smoothly within the next few days.

As many people as possible should start waiting in line at fileplanet, it will finish before steam will and will also take strain off of the steam servers so other people can finish their downloads faster. Hopefully we will get some steam full install mirrors up soon so some load is take off fileplanet so the lines don't get too long.

Ask here, Valve isn't going to respond to you so don't try it.

                      Can someone help?

I finally got it all installed and working but when I try and connect to a server it just gives me an error, it's something like "cannot connect to auth server, could not get stead id validation" I think this might be due to the fact I was never actually asked for my CD key for some reason, is there anyway I can add it? I can do a new game but since there is no bots it's just me running about shooting the walls :)

So at the screen where you "prepare to play counter-strike(or half-life)..." how long should an average person actually wait? And should they...HOLY SHIT IT FUCKING WORKED.

                            Lol, finally.

                                ://Define

Steam - Pressurized water vapor used for heating, cooking, or to provide mechanical power.

Currently "Steam" has been of no use to me in both the cooking and heating world nor in the mechanical world. Everyone seems to figure that after this major update and first set of steam being released everything will go fine. I would like to put this politely but I highly doubt(unless steam is the world's greatest achievement) that it will work out the way it is intended.

Steams Concept: Basically steam is just what many giants (Microsoft) would love to see, which is one major source for all your needs, big or small. Somewhat like XBOX-Live, every user downloads their updates from giant ass "STEAM CERTIFIED" servers.

Problem one with this is that there is no way in hell there are enough servers capable or in number for the world to use all at once to download steam and its components.

Problem two comes with the idea that this is just the first phase and it will all pass over. But has anyone thought about when new updates are released? It will be just as jammed as the first release. Because everyone in the world will want the new version at the exact same DAMN time. The waiting time will be no less than it is now and I can guarantee that.

Steam is a great concept but I don't think it was/is put together well enough. Good idea, bad implementation. KTHX
