    New 1.6 Approaches

First of all, I'd like to mention that even with the eventual release of Steam it is not clear when Counter-Strike 1.6 final will be released. It is not yet decided--from what I gather--whether or not CS 1.6 final will be delivered over Steam or via traditional methods. This could have changed recently, however.

Anyway, the latest changelog update has been released for CS 1.6 BETA. This is the version we'll be playing as soon as the gold version of Steam is released for download.
      changes/additions

    • added skins support to steam (\platform\skins).

    • added new cvar "sv_region" to describe the region the server is in.

    • added "region" concept to server browser.

    • added range check for "gamma" cvar.

    • removed dependency on won protocols.

    • added more buy menu client commands to support the cstrike retail weapon names:

    • hltv: maximum number of connected spectators is tracked ('status' command).

    • hltv: switched 'autoretry' behavior back to the way it was in 1.1.1.0.

    • hltv: added 'hltv' to heartbeat.

    • hltv: removed dependency on won protocols.

      bug fixes

    • fixed shield exploit with using 'lastinv' command.

    • fixed bug with motd not being displayed.

    • fixed server log (and console) getting spammed when a terrorist would escape on an es_ map.

    • fixed bug with buy menus overlapping each other.

    • fixed talk icon not displaying sometimes.

    • fixed mp3s being looked for in the wrong folder.

    • fixed mp3 playback in being cutoff sometimes.

    • fixed bug with the "kick" command.

    • fixed bug where you couldn't enter a hostname that started with a number.

    • fixed mouse support for 3dfx cards.

    • fixed html scrollbars not showing up sometimes.

    • fixed "hostname" being initialized to "half-life" for listen servers (for all mods).

    • hltv: fixed 'record' to continue recording demos after reconnect.

    • hltv: fixed cheering bug.
Not listed, but included, is the recent update to Cobble from DaveJ.

As we prepare for another CS 1.6 update to roll around, bds from SK has posted a detailed look at the changes to the CS 1.6 netcode. Many of the changes are fixes or enhancements that players like bds have been pushing for.

This update isn't adding much, is it? Just fixing things...

            ell oh ell oh ell.

if you exclude the [faggot] shield and [nubsprayandpray] new weapons, as well as many map changes, netcode changes and a new (plastic) knife model

altho this changelog is just from the latest 1.6 BETA to 1.6 final, not the 1.5-1.6 changelog

skins support sounds more like winamp skins for the Steam UI, not custom models.

In the #Steam IRC channel at gamesnet they are posting this FAQ list...

1 ) Yes, 1.6 is going final with this

2 ) Yes, you have to register again. If you use the same email address, your friends list will come over though

3 ) **update** you WILL have to download a new client for steam. Existing beta installs will not upgrade automatically. < -- yes, I know it conflicts with the webpage. We pointed that out to valve

4 ) Steamid's are first come first serve basis

5 ) We do not know the time the client will come out, please be patient. We will post in channel when client is released. Pacific time is GMT-7 and CET-8. (normally gmt-8 but Daylight savings time)

6 ) You will need a valid Halflife or CS Retail key to use steam

7 ) *UPDATE* WON will be up for some time. Timeline has not been established. 1.5 will be playable until WON is gone.

8 ) Steam does not work on LAN only servers. Offline mode is coming

9 ) HLDS is for Dedicated servers only. NOT clients. Servers will NOT get steamids and do NOT need cd-keys

10 ) Mods and items like hlsw are supposed to work with 1.6

11 ) league questions need to be directed to the leagues themselves

12 ) New clients will be available off of steampowered.com and mirrors shortly thereafter. Remember, its just an installer.

13 ) There will not be patches like before. Steam will download the required content automatically.

14 ) *UPDATE* Keep your 1.5 install in place. Steam will use it so it won't download as much for 1.6. Steam will prompt for deletion of the 1.5 install.

15 ) You must use the steam final to register for your steamid.
