Half-Life 2 Benchmark Date

GameSpot recently talked to Gabe Newell, of VALVe, about the benchmark that will soon be released. He discusses the benchmark features that will be integrated with Half-Life 2. He reveals that the Half-Life 2 benchmark will be available publicly on September 30, the same date when Half-Life 2 has been scheduled for release. He also explains how ATI graphics cards will run significantly better in the game. You can read the rest of the article here. Here's a little snippet:

In comparison with the high-end Nvidia card, the ATI Radeon 9600 and 9800 Pro perform much better in the Half-Life 2 test's "full precision" mode. According to Newell's presentation, the GeForce 5900 Ultra scores 30fps in this test, whereas the Radeon 9600 scores 48fps and the Radeon 9800 Pro scores just over 60fps.

The way Nvidia designed the geforce FX it's just not good for dx9 games such as HL2. Hell that thing even showed that the TI4600 almost kept up with the FX5900 Ultra, while the modest 9600 pro outperformed them both.



I've got a 9800 pro so I'm quite happy to see that I'll have very playable framerates with max detail.

No, those results are from maxed out settings apparently. I'd say it will run fine on decent cards with the settings tweaked.

It just means you have to set HL2 to a lower level of graphical detail.



Or just get the latest gfx card if you have a money tree growing in the back yard.

Nvidia got its butt beat. Sucks for people who got a 5900. Hopefully drive could help, but I don't think they will help much.

Heh, anyway, nice to see I'm not the only nerd who downloaded a 600meg E3 video, though I'm one of the few to do it on a 56k. Well, seeing as I have a GeForce 2, I was planning on having the detail levels pretty far down regardless, so this honestly probably won't affect me regardless. By the time I have spending money available for a new graphics card, things like the 9800 and the FX 5900 will likely be obsolete, heh.



You gotta figure, though, if all you need is a DirectX 6 capable video card, then you'll definitely be able to play with good framerates on the more recent nVidia cards. Pity you'll lose some of the eye candy and such. Probably have to run in 32-bit color instead of those crazy 128-bit floating point color modes, with a few less shadows or something. Oh well, no biggie.
