Combating cheats against sourcecode would require much more complex patching.

Of course, the other advantage is that one would assume everyone else at Valve would be making models and graphics a touch better and improving the story and so on.

Plus, CS is a free game. Thats where a major difference lies.
HL2 is a single player game (i.e. cheats don't matter) SO they can just release secure shit later for all the networked games. I'm still not convinced of your argument. It just doesn't make sense to delay. I think the reason they are doing so goes back to originally what went wrong, namely they don't have enough bandwidth to reasonably meet all the demand.

No Nathan, valve still most likely have the code, its just that with half of the community having seen it, it defeats the point of closed source.
      K good.

It was the physics engine that was taken, and everything will use it.

omfg...I didnt actually think that my EB Games had the right release date from the start, Summer 2004 :O

my faith in EB release dates has been restored.

now my dilema...wait till Summer 2004 to get HL2 with the (i think) "new" Radion card or get 1 now while its still expensive

I wish they would release the single player game and just postpone the multiplayer part until later if they're worried about hacks. They were originally planning on releasing them separate for some anyhow. This way they'd get the physics engine out before anyone else and hacks wouldn't affect it. Then again, I really don't know exactly what was leaked so I'll just wait. This just means I'll use that $50 for Halo or Call of Duty and save up another $50 by next year.

Now it's time for CZ mania! People will be like "Hey! This game r0x0rz! Thanx j00 VALVe!" And maybe they'll be able to make some of their money back on that whole mess.

If this was such a big problem why wasn't it mentioned until now? With the release of the news that some *&^%ing *&^%s had stolen from valve we were not told that it would delay production at all. Personally I am starting to believe that Valve is looking (and has found) an excuse to step back from a very ambitious release date. But hey, I don't work for valve, and they no doubt have good reasons. If it isnt done or they are recoding, it will all go to making HL2 a better game. Since Doom3 has been postponed so it can duplicate all of HL2's innovations (physics engine and the like), the pressure for a quick release is off. The hacks will be there btw, with or without a source leak, 5 days hack free and then its gone. It may take some time for the hacks to distribute, but I believe every hacker worth a dime will attempt to hack HL2. Pity. Good luck valve, and my condolences. I hope you get to find those hackers and make em feel pain. - Tink

Maybe that fat fuck gabe got the message that giving false hopes of release dates piss people off, pissing people off makes them hack their servers. Thus even pissing more people off by delaying it more. All in all everyone is pissed .

OK here's what I've managed to gather since the hacking news broke:

#1 - HL2 was pushed back from Sept 30 to 'holiday season' because of Steam (bandwidth problems, amongst other things). A new P2P code is being included hence the original delay.

#2 - The hack. There is enough info floating around on the web (if you look hard enough) to suggest that all of the HL2 source code was taken, not just 1/3 of it as Valve is reporting.

3# - The beta. HL2 beta also appears to have been stolen. I heard this morning that the beta is on bittorrent and usenet now. This is the real beta and not 1.3 Gb of gay p0rn. There is at least one web site hosting images from the beta. No, I don't have it as I intend to buy the full game, no matter when it is released.

4# - The delay II. The announced April date was obviously being banded about internally as a 'worst case' scenario. The guy from Vivendi probably jumped the gun by disclosing this, share prices took a tumble hence a hasty retraction. Expect to see an official annoucement in the next day or so that the game *will* be released in time for Xmas. It will be financial suicide for Valve and Vivendi to miss this date (not to mention having to deal with a pissed ATI) and you can bet your ass that the beta will be widely available by then...

                            That is all.
Hopefully some of us will understand the situation better because of this info...

I think you all missed some news from #36, this is true. A BETA version is doing the rounds, here's some screenshots ... THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME, IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY INFORMATION WHERE IT CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM. DO NOT DOWNLOAD BETA, YOU ARE A THEIF IF YOU DO.
