I was trying to convey the overall lack of substance of the counter-point. Gaming can be an artform, just as Football (soccer) and i'm sure most other sports, but that doesn't make it art.



Their argument failed to clearly define art, which is different to every person. Rizzuh can say that to him personally CS is art, it is a personal thing.



Of course other people (like myself) would argue that an artform such as gaming or sport is not art because it gives an unambigous message or emotion.

One of the other criteria that defines true 'art', is its ability to stand the test of time. A Van Gogh painting, a Mozart concerto or a Michael Angelo scupture would all be good examples of works of art that remain relevant, no matter how much time passes since their creation.



While definitive 'classics' of computer/video game design such as Pac-Man or Tetris might possibly be commemorated as 'art' in one hundred years time, I'd hardly expect a game like Counter-Strike to be remembered in quite the same way...



To put another spin on it, one hundred or so years ago, companies started making toys out of stamped tin and metal. They were perhaps, the best 'games' of their era, yet are rarely thought of as true 'art'. I think Counter-Strike and other computer/video games might well be remembered in a similar manner to how we see those toys today...



CS is perhaps, simply one of the more popular 'virtual toys' of our time.

What is art and what isn't art is based entirely on a person's own opinion. Someone might say the Mona Lisa is great for example, while someone else might say it looks crap. The paintings that hang in galleries around the world are there because the majority of people classify them as art.



Art is supposed to be emotinal, the artist tries to convey emotions that could not be done in any other way. Music is a form of art, but are games? Most games are created solely for enjoyment, e.g. pacman, but there are some games out there that try to involve the player emotionaly, Ico being a good example.



Art doesn't have to look nice, it just has to grab the person in an emotional way. (Final fantasy, anyone?) To me, CS isn't art, it doesn't convey emotions to me. It's just there to be enjoyed, but it's not art.

Sad and geeklike would be an in-depth discussion of effects of ex_interp. How you qualify a discussion about art as geeklike is beyond me.

What do you mean by this statement? That the average teenager is the demographic target of CSN and therefore in your opinion any discussion rising above the crust around your toilet bowl is irrelevant?

I think it was a fine idea, and maybe its a bit TOO advanced for some of the 13- readers we got here. This subject is not only for CS, but for games as a whole.



I think that console games are already mainstream, and have concurrently gone into cookie-cutter mode. There will be less and less innovation. The only hope for creativity is now in the hands of Silicon Knights(Eternal Darkness), certain divisions of Sega, and Shigeru Miyamoto when he's doped up.



I don't want to play another GTA game, killing on a car and killing on a bike ARE THE SAME FRIGGIN THING SO WHY DOESNT THE SSERIES DIEEE!?!!!!



Edit: BTW, Silicon Knights next game, Too Human is going to pwn :P
