Massive topic obviously, but here goes...

Yes, games clearly are a product, so are movies, and so are books. For example the Lord of the Rings book by JRR Tolkien is largely seen as a work of art, the movie by Peter Jackson probably is too. The game - debatable? The attempt throughout, however, was to recreate the feelings and the emotion (or the artistc appeal) of JRR Tolkiens work. So is art the product, or the process?

Art should be art regardless of the medium chosen. Using advances in technology shouldn't matter. Cave paintings/Graphic design - method is irrelevant.

While multiplayer has no single artist, it is feasible that it has multiple artists (players) that contribute to a combined experience that exceeds the potential of a sole artist's ability and potential. The problem with multiplayer CS isn't the graphics or the scripting, its that some people don't contribute to the experience and detract from its artistic potential.

I agree with Dagan, art is a paradox by its very nature. Its this inherent dichotomy that makes art what it is. Since the audience is the individual self, right or wrong doesn't apply unless you require it for your own individual reasonaing. Therefore, you can't quantify art because it is recieved (and judged) according to your emotional state. And that is different from person to person and even changes frequently within the self.

Finally, valuing artistic worth is revisionist to a large degree. You take the poem, the painting, whatever, and you try and value it on what inspired and contributed to its creation by the artist (feelings, effort, experience etc.) and then compare this to the final piece. In this way you attempt to give credit to the artistic process. I believe CS can be considered art because while the experience is largely up to the audience, CS does attempt to create a unique atmosphere and there is evidence of a creative process.

Shit, sorry its long as, good topic tho.

Damn, and I was trying to sound smart, until Lucky Strike upstaged me. But I disagree on the opinion that if something is creative, it is automatically art. I can write a creative essay, just as Lucky has, about whether something is art or not. But does that make it art, itself?

wow... who cares?! dont get me wrong. im not average joe only mass appeal crap. playing counter-strike is stepping out of the shell, but trying to make a connection between art and a game is kinda sad. im not saying there is one, but its not worthy of an entire article!

i agree with #35...i think you guys ran out of ideas. For your next counter point, you should analyze the way CS affects world events. Why, Ariel Sharone used his CT forces to invade Palestine but they didn't have kevlar so the T's rock throwing penetrated their defense and...yeah.

I agree and disagree on many aspects of this entire article. However, after thinking carefully, I have no opinion on either side and think that games are and are not both and/or neither.

That's funny, I don't see a lot of suggestions coming from the peanut gallery.

I think you both missed the boat.

There are different forms and different meanings of "art" and you mixed and matched and argued, all the while taking 'art' into different contexts.

Gaming is an artform, like Ballet, Films, Books, Music and so on. They are produced by people to entertain other people, and are measured in terms of popularity.

Art on its own is a completely different thing. Art is something intangible. It's an interpretation of something created by someone else that makes it meaningful to a single person. In this way, many paintings are art. Some music is art.

If someone plays and loves counter-strike only for the way it makes them feel as though they are fighting this battle in their own personal lives, with their team of friends helping them through it, then CS can be art to that person. They have interpreted the artform to be something other than what is strikingly obvious, and made it meaningful to themselves.

Who plays CS, or any game in that manner?

A story (such as in a Game, a Book or a Film) is something that forces a certain emotion. There is no room for personal interpretation or meaning.

Art is found by the individual, and they see it in their own personal way.

Hell, Business is supposedly an art! Can you look at a graphs of the economy and market shares and gather your own personal interpretation of what is shown? Business is created by people just as the other forms of art are, but there is mostly small or finite room to interpret what is seen.

Art is not art, it's only art if it's art

Well now that you've summed it all up I don't think there's any arguing with that bold (and italicized) statement. Great job!

Most games are just products. Just because someone had some creative input in it, doesn't neccisarily make it art. When a chef makes a fancy dinner in a resteraunt, should that be considered art too?

I fail to see where any game is good enough to be considered art. Hell, most people's "art" is so bad it can't be considered art (see deviantart.com). Games are designed to be fun so they can sell themselves (duh). True art must transcend capitalism and must transcend the need to send a commentary or message. The fact that message is being sent or a design was created to be profited from is not a qualification.

Art, by it's nature, must convey emotion without speaking, without monetary value and without the need for the viewer to contribute anything to it. I'm sure many consider Gooseman to be an artist as he surely sees himself sometimes. But today's loosely based and socially correct definition of art differs greatly from what will be seen as true art in the long run. Do you disagree?

A good game like CS, Quake or Halo is just that, a good game.
