    cpoint: adaptation

Is Counter-Strike art? Are any games art? I won't give my opinion away, so if you want to know how rizzuh and I feel about this issue, you'll have to read the latest Counter-Point. Here's a taste of what rizzuh had to say:
Imagine the day when multiplayer games, on top of the action, have huge story arcs, amazing character development and ways to make the players feel emotion. A time away, I'll admit. Counter-Strike however, tries at these things. Story arcs are player deaths where the tides change; character development is getting to know your teammates; emotion is the thrill and anger of loss and defeat. Just because gamers get to paint half of a painting, doesn't mean that the painting doesn't exist.

Multiplayer games are primitive at this point. Art that is primitive is still art.
After that tasty morsel, how could you not go for the whole meal? Take a look at Counter-Point, then discuss it in the comments!

If you like this week's Counter-Point, be sure to read last week's issue or the archives.

There are quite a few multiplayer online RPGs that convey emotions...

In case you're wondering, yes, this is how a typical argument with rizzuh goes.

I may clear, thought out (though arguable) statements, rizzuh takes my ideas out of context, makes up things I never said, and brings them all together with a well-placed insult.

Is it any wonder why we have so much fun doing these every week?

Some games are art; like the truly beautiful games like FFX. Some games are far from art, no matter how "abstract" you want to go. Like Super Mario Brothers. All arcade games before 1992. I could go on for years about how many games looked awful but were fun anyways. But few qualify for art. besides "Barbie's Art Museum Adventure".

Art is beauty. I can't think of any games that truly awed me with their beauty, but there's some really pretty ones out there.

Art is sublime. Halflife is art.

Art is involving. Vice City is art.

Art is what moves you. Any game that moves you is art in it's own way.

I think rizzuh and asspennies ignored the art form that most closely mirrors games, poetry. Good poetry has to fit into a technical framework and work in it, but also has to be inspired to be good, just like a good game.

I definitely don't think CS is art. It doesn't move me. sure i play it a lot and it's involving enough, but it's far more sport than art. Throwaway line removed due to Doodleman3 having no sense of humour what-so-ever.

                        'sides, it's waaaaaaay too ugly.......
And so are some of those abstract Picasso Paintings but ugliness doesn't mean its not art, in fact someone may consider something art simply because it is ugly.

Because that's what art is, it's what you consider to be art not what other people tell you art is. Another person might no agree with you so it's not art to them, but that doesn't mean it's not art to you.

So you enjoy your art and I'll enjoy mine and we'll both be the happier for it.

Play a game like FFVII, even to this day, if you play the game through, the story line pulls you in, will great twists, interesting charcaters, love, death, mystery...... it's really freakin good.

If I'm going to hell, I assure you, it's for vastly different reasons.
