CPL Pays Differently

The Cyberathlete Professional League, in an attempt to speed up payments and presumably lessen monetary disputes within clans, has recently issued a new rule. In summary, they're only going to pay corporations. "Teams (or clans) must provide one corporate name for prize payments," says the Winter Event rules. "NewWorld and Sponsors will not make payments to individual team members, only to a team organization or corporate owner."



AVault.com, owned by the CPL's parent company (NewWorld), has posted a bit of a summary on the matter. Included is a way for clans to set up their own corporation. One has to wonder if this will have any effect on the tumultuous clan scene of the States in particular, as AVault makes the aim of the ruling seem to be. Would you be bound to a clan simply because it filed for corporation status?

Do they mean that the team needs to be incorporated, with a charter and all that jazz? They need to sell stock and have a Board of Directors? So let me get this straight: the payment goes to their coporate sponsors, who are supposed to give the team some money, or what?

That seems like a bite in the ass in some ways.



It would be a pain in the ass to go through all the setting up of 'coperate sponsors' or a 'coperation' for that matter. Turing clans into a Legal business? Hmm, this could get tricky.



Perhaps this means a little something more than just sponsorship, but companies actually owning clans. Not something I like to particularly hear.



Wait a minute, this reminds me of how baseball turned out... whats that I smell? A strike?



I can only imagine greedy and ignorant labor unions trying to get involved in a league such as this.



Of course the upsides are making it easier to pay them, thus setteling disputes, as it of course says, and forcing clans to be more professional, and organized.

it basicly means, a clan has to be reigstered as a company/coperation so wen they are paying the clan, they pay to a company eg the money transaction looks more pro and will get more sponsors for the cpl because the sponsors know where the money is going. overall it makes e-sports look nice and organized wen it isnt

Did they (whoever won money at the CPL) have to pay taxes on monies won before?

All that the new policy states is that CPL will no longer issue checks to individual gamers (from a team), but either to a team organization, a dba, a third party company or an assignee.



This will speed check processing for the CPL and it's a great opportunity for clans that have hopes of playing professionally to maybe even incorporate their teams and get sponsors, partners, managers, etc.

Of course, since we can always trust you and AVault as objective sources of information on the CPL. After what i've seen from you, i finally have to ask; Just what in the fuck is wrong with you?



The "bigger picture":



Additional fees IN ADDITION to what the CPL already charges to be a participant.



Tired of 8 hour days of mind-numbing practice sucking the fun out of the game? Too bad. Have some more suck:

"* Maintaining a corporation requires more paperwork and record keeping than sole proprietorships. Each individual state has its own legal procedures and regulations for forming and maintaining a corporation in good standing."

Sounds like fun to me. And that's the tip of the iceberg.



Or, what if someone's pissed about not being let into a clan? Hey, no problem. Discrimination lawsuit. Affirmative action, coming to a clan near you! What a fun possibility! Or hell, imagine the wholly entertaining "inter-company" power struggles. Oh, but that probably wouldn't happen, seeing as how clans are perfectly stable and composed of fully competent people.



I guess people are expected to just jump at the chance to make things easier for Angel and the CPL while making it more unnecessarily complicated for themselves. I can just feel the CPLs warmth for the community. Nothing says "I love and appreciate you all" like this does.

Here's what WE are saying, which has little to do with what YOU are saying:



We will no longer send checks to individual team members, only to either a team organization, a dba, a third party company, a sponsor or an assignee. It's all very simple and there is no need to incorporate if the clan does not want to. IOW one check per team.

Now there will be arguements over how much each clan member gets. And egos will flare. Why don't they just throw money at the winners, and give them lavish pads? :)

That would work. The CPL could sign a deal and make it into a new gameshow on Nickelodeon.
