    Resolution Myth Dispelled

    It's funny to see how many CS players out there believe that lowering the resolution of CS actually makes it easier to get headshots due to an increased size of player models. Well, this article over at Domain of Games finally dispels that myth, with a gaggle of side-by-side screenshots for evidence.
    Well, with all these people claiming that a lower resolution makes models bigger and makes getting headshots easier you'd think that everyone would play in 640x480 or lower. However, if anyone actually bothered to do research they would realize that they are completely wrong.
    In fact, as the screenshots in the article show, when using a sniper scope your field of view becomes greatly restricted at high resolutions. Judge for yourself and read the rest of the article.

    Fact is, I'm fairly pissed about Valve STILL not fixing that scope issue. It was supposed to be fixed in CS 1.4.

        Speaking of scope issues... theres another one Valve has yet to fix. One that can be used as a cheat. I won't say the command here, though.

          I wish Valve would fix the scope issue also for those of us who want to play in high resolutions because we don't have circa 1998 machines.

          BTW this marked comment thing is cool... seems new, havn't seen it before but I've been at the CPL and doing other things.

            Somebody thought that it's easier to play on 400x300? HAHAHA.



            Well, let me tell you this. All you AK and M4 snipe whores: it's impossible to aim at long ranges because everything melds into the background, and the crosshair is so big you could shove your RL head though it. Sure, the scope thing is an advantage, but that's why I'm so much better with the AW/M than the AK.

                  btw that website has the worst color scheme ive ever seen.. apart from djmeleee..
                  and its faster even if you have a geforce4 because your cpu doesnt have as many pixels to draw

                    how come none of those people cited higher framerate as a reason for running lower res? thats the only reason I would even consider it...

                      In lower rez, its not the size of the player model that changes, just the ratio of player to crosshair. Check out this screenie from the article. You can clearly see that while the player model stays the same size on the screen, the crosshair size is drastically larger in the first, 640x480 shot. To me, in my experience, this makes it far easier to line up your target with the exact centre of the crosshair, leading to improved accuracy. I'd say thats the arguement for lower resolutions.

                          I recently just lowered my res from 1280x920 (or something like that) to 800x600. The sole benefit for it is the cross hair, as imo its the only thing that changes. At long distance, picking off people with a rifle (m4, ak etc) its certainly easier, as you can actually see when someone is in your crosshair.



                          I have even considered lowering it to 640x480 for this sole reason, because of the cross hair. If the crosshair scaled to match the resolution, then I would certainly run in higher resolution again.

                            guys its cause in low res when you move your mouse you have less pixels to cross over.

                              if the middle of the crosshair is cut out like that, there is a much larger area which you have to guess where the middle is. in high resolution, there is a much smaller area so you can more easily tell where the center of the crosshair is.



                              I recently changed my resolution from 1024 to 1600 because I got a new video card. I would only recommend 1600 resolution if you have a 19" monitor or higher, otherwise you might not notice the difference at all. The only drawback that I think having a high-res is the sniping, but im not a sniper anymore, so it doesn't bother me. If you do decide to change to a high resolution, make sure you download big fonts, or you wont be able to read the text which looks like its 3 pixels tall in such a high res.
