Low res reduces lag though, especialling on LAN.....which equates faster shooting......

    average ping for 800x600= 20-30

    average ping for 600x480= 10-15

P.S. Due to increased flaming, Rze, I have changed my name to Flame Ranger. For those wish to flame me, do them the favour by putting the amusing text at the bottom of my name.

Ok pixels or no pixels its easier to aim at lower res. More control over your movement so post all you want and waste as much time as you want the game will never change.

Uhh.... if the rendering system was totally removed from the Half-Life engine the control and movement would remain exactly the same. There is no increase in control over movement at lower resolutions. When you move your mouse it changes the angle you're pointing at, and AS A RESULT, the renderer shows the world at a different angle. What you're saying would mean that somehow the variables in a certain structure in HL magically are affected by the resolution. Such a thing would require EXTRA coding and would needlessly add to the computations done every frame.

I hope you're joking when you say "so post all you want and waste as much time as you want the game will never change." That would be the single most ignorant thing I've ever seen anyone ever say. I'm wasting my time by explaining to you how the game actually works, and you think that I'm somehow trying to change how the game works by explaining this to you? Uh alright.

If it reduces lag, it's because your computer is too slow. This really depends on your definition of lag too... dropped frames, ping, what? Maybe this is what you meant but I kind of got the feeling that you thought there was a direct relation here somehow.

As for faster shooting - No. The rate at which, for example, the mp5 shoots is time-based, not frame-based. Also, actual damage is calculated on the SERVER, which is totally independant of your own computer. Your computer may slow to such a point where it looks like you're shooting at half the rate you should be (maybe if you're doing like 5 frames per second), but the same damage is being done on the server. Reason for this? The server gets two events from each client for each button - pressed and released. Until it gets a released signal from your fire key (or you run out of ammo) it is still doling out damage.

I like poopy. But pixels are nice. Why can't I set my resolution to 700x700? Why is it 800x600? WHY CAN'T I HAVE A PROPER SQUARE!? I hate you for touching my bum.

anyway, I still am aware that no matter how you break it down or explain it, the aiming is easier at lower res. Controling yourself is easier and in return aiming is easier. Simply said "Aiming at lower res is easier then aiming on higher res."

Actually I really don't care how the old moded quake 2 engine works or why aiming at lower res is easier, but I am curious as to why you chose the name of LuftWaffle. Are you German?

          btw, ignorance is bliss

I should use the "report to admins" option on Luft's posts for knowing too much about pixels and stuff. Just a grab a gun and shoot things, that's what CS is.

Roger that, Luft. I was going to say something like that, but seeing as how you've already summed up my position quite nicely, thank you.

I must be the only 400 mhz, 400x300-res CSer out there right now. And I'll tell you this, Luft is absolutely correct. I've had my fps drop enough to be counted on one hand whilst engaging an enemy. When this happens, I instinctively clamp down on the "fire" button, in the hopes my MP5 will continue spraying and I'll hit something. You'd be surprised how often this actually works. And you'll also be surprised how often I die.

And after those two surprises, it won't surprise you to know this happens fairly often on my computer, which has an MS DOS compatibility error on its C drive.

And he can use a G3, too. Is there anything Luft can't do? Aycaramba. Some guys have all the luck.

all i know is it doesnt matter what resolution u use just use what u think is best and ur good with

i never even knew there was a 400x300 resolution until today

                  what abut monitor size?
surely if you have a 21" running 400x300 the models heads will look bigger?
or am i just an idiot.

people here have got some seriously weird ideas about how computers and games work, its freaking funny. Lower res = Less "Lag"...... well DUH, the video card has a much easier time at increasing lower resolutions, so people play at whatever resolution their video card can handle (honestly I don't understand people that play above the 1024x768 or 1152x864 area, thats just too small for me, you must have to have a magnifing glass out when you play). Anyway, I would like to know who said that Lower Res = Easier/More Headshots to being with because thats about the funniest myth I've ever heard. Also I think getalife is trying to say that at lower resolutions everything appears bigger, so that gives him the feeling of better control even though the control/movement/etc is the same. (well actually thats not what he was saying, but thats probably what gives him the feeling of better control at low res)

                    and that g3....... UGH!

Your quite right, they would be freaking huge, but you won't find lining up someone's head any easier, as has been stated before and for the above stated reasons

If the cross-hairs where more like that of Rainbow Six then I would much rather prefer to play in higher rez.

At high rez I have a serious problem finding the cross-hairs.

Changing the color does nothing!...The only colors we have available are all pastel.

Valve should make an a cross-hair menu like the one in America's Army...or something similar.

lol, actually no thats not what I was trying to say. Maybe what I was saying was bullshit and LuftWaffle was right. Your all nubs, based on logistics it is all the same with the exception of the text and crosshair so gg to all. Theoretically LuftWaffle is more correct then the many of you by far.

By the way, everything you read here, its all propaganda. Waste some more time! The evil internet owns you and I alike!

Taking into account every monitor was appropriately sized for the resolution it displayed, i feel half-life is perfectly balnced.

This subject is too complex D:

Umm if your computer is not ancient you can just run in direct3d mode and you don't have to worry about res. If your card is that old that you can't run in direct3d, your comp is total TRASH

i use 1600*1200 cuz the crosshair is tiny.. therefore i feel its more accurate.. (you dont have a huge gaping hole in the middle of the glock xhair for example)

                                again, luft is right..

the server doesnt look at your computer and say "ooh, his crosshair was right over that head colored pixel".. this is 3d not 2d..

the display is just that, a display. everything is 3d coordinates.. when you fire your gun it traces the bullet in 3d using your aiming vector.. it doesnt look whats under your xhair
