It's true.. you can no longer move the hostages as a terrorist. Which I think is dumb because it's not really realistic, but I also think it's a good idea because it keeps people from exploiting the game with them.. i.e. using them to climb onto previously unreachable ledges.

And then they get "cdkey in use" errors. For most casual cheaters, a banned cdkey will stop them.



We've heard all of this bs before. "And what happens when OGC client hook is blocked? System will update it!" Now the OGC client hook doesn't even exist anymore, Valve has successfully defeated the worst cheat ever. VAC, predicted to be a failure by the cheating community, was a great success. Cheats should have already learned that cheating is wrong. A ban list will ruin their game.



Thanks grim and gloomy, but your predictions are pointless and depend on too many variables. After the all of the stolen cdkeys are banned, people won't have much to "write-in," now will they?



They could also get a new IP, since the majority of IPs are dynamic. Your solution is weak and your argument against VALVe is poor. Wow, they get a new cdkey and are banned five seconds later.

I hate to break it to ya'll because it sounds like you are having so much fun venting about cheaters and hackers but............as of this evening, I am not able to get into any server.



I am running a Voodoo 3500 video card in opengl mode and I have NEVER, EVER, EVER cheated or knowing downloaded a hack. I changed the video mode from opengl to direct3d and this allowed me to play.



Hope this helps and hope that Valve recognizes the problem. Good thing you guys arent in charge of banning or I would never get to play again because of this issue.

I don't really think there is a need to perma-ban anybody. Anybody playing with a cheat can't get on a pure server, so what's the need to perma ban them? If they uninstall the cheats then come and play, so what, they are legit. There aren't any rules saying that you can't be an asshole and play CS too.



I think as long as there are no cheats on the computer, they should be allowed to play.

Well the other problem is alot of 'private' cheats too that apprently only few cheaters or leaders of cheating clans are supposed to know about.



And so if you detect cheats on someone, if he is one of those ppl with access to 'private' ones, he will just uninstall the detectable ones and keep the private ones running.



So perm-bands could be a good idea.



But then again, the other problem is what about when people change their mind and become honest CS players.



I think the best method would be just the prevention of cheaters and kicking them if they are detected, so they can just remove the cheats and play. But then again, a ban could teach them a lesson, and if they mention in the user end agreements, and even on the back of the box of let's say Condition Zero then downloading cheats will result in perm loss of multiplayer capability, n00bs wouldn't even dare download cheats out of fear :P



No matter what we do, I think some people are going to suffer, and not just cheaters.

Voodoo, eh? You running the WickedGL drivers? This would not be the first time that people running those drivers generated false positives with the VAC, and perhaps it's once again slipped in. If this is legit, then more and more users will likely start reporting the problem, and it will be addressed. Good luck in D3D until then.



At the beginning of all this anti-cheat stuff, I was really hoping that VAC would just sit there seemingly idle for a month or so, just gathering information, never kicking or banning anyone. Then *bam* one day come along and perma-ban everyone who had been repeatedly detected, and start kicking/temp banning all further incidents by other users. Would have been dramatic and very effective. But, this way we got a sooner fix for the cheating problems, so it's been good.



Nice to see that a ban list will finally be incorporated. As we can see from the post, though, they're just collecting information. Chances are if you're just having driver issues that VAC is identifying, then you're not gonna get banned. If VAC finds OGC versions blah, blah, and new enhanced blah on your computer, and repeated connection attempts on various servers, then yeah, banny banny time.



Glad to see Valve's continued committment to their products, and can't wait to see the VAC technology availible to the other HL mods.

I had the same problem as die_scum. To my knowledge, I don't have any cheats whatsoever (as indicated by my often mediocre score) on my computer. I was playing this morning, no problems at all, and then I tried to play this afternoon, and no dice. I deleted my Half-Life folder and my cstrike folder and reinstalled everything (except for the hack :P) and still, no go. I can't play cs anymore.



So, what I'm trying to say instant, permanent ban is a little hasty because of the possible false positives it generates. I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.

maybe i'm an idiot but i wasn't aware that the vac took any action other than disabling the cheat, so I don't see how it banned you

a permenant ban would be one of the worse things they could do.

all of the possibilitys of false detection..

maybe a new update to a video card driver well cause it to "detect a cheat"...

just to many possibilitys of faults if they did that.

perhaps after a certain amount of tries to cheat in a set time-frame then a ban happens for a couple of days or something.
