I think the problem of people disliking maps over-complexity comes in to question because of two points.

    1) Having to learn tactics and forced teamplay (impossible to form a coordinated team on the majority of servers)

    2) The general feeling of ``safety''

Point 1 is self-explaitory, complex maps require more teamwork to win since there are more options and more areas to cover. Also includes the time taken to learn a map.

Point 2 basically covers something I think about when I design a cs map. How ``safe'' you feel at any given location. Basically this means areas where a player feels somewhat secure about the probable chance of an enemy being in the area and the probable location of his/her teammates.

Using Aztec as an example, a ``safe'' area would be somewhere to retreat to and shoot from without being all open to attack. Such a place would be the T side, behind the double doors and rope bridge area (a little further back). Or the Sniper nest in Dust which is really open to vunerable fire from 2 points (behind from the CT spawn (not really that bad) and the far side near the double doors at bombsite A. - The bridge doesn't really count since the player can duck out behind crates.)

This probably sounds like a load of crap to you but it's how i guage the way a map will play. If you look at the history of cs maps, the less popular maps tend to be those with more vunverable areas such as as_tundra with its wide open field of death or the trend in maps to be a lot more complex in design (havana, and backalley). The complexity doesn't always dictate people like or dislike for the map like in vertigo, where the vunerability comes from being shot down upon from above and the paranoia created by the footsteps.

    Just my take on things.

Updating the engine would only make things better. Sure, you have the higher-polygon models, but Valve would also be able to throw stuff in like the players casting shadows. Something like that would entirely change the game and make it much more strategic.

Actually... making the game more strategic would just piss a lot of para-rushers off. So nevermind.

CS:CZ is either gunna r0x0rz or suck ass (rocket launcher still frightens me... I can only imagine the multiplayer with it). Some of my friends believe in the second option. I am a strong believer in the first. Although this news of delay should piss me off like others did (Perfect Dark? Diablo 2? ZELDA [not the new gay one]!!) it didn't. The reason may be that I am used to delay, and it does in fact mean we are in for a better game. The fact may be that we have one of the best multiplayer games to fall back on while we wait out the extra month.

            ...

Or the fact may just be that WarCraft III comes out today. And although noone will admit it, they are going to the store to PUT DOWN THE $50 AND GET THEIR |=V(|<1^/6 MONEY'S WORTH!

            Unless you are poor. :^(

"Another few years, yeah, CS:CZ will have that "old engine" look to it that the Half-Life engine now has."

A few years? How abouta few weeks or maybe months at the most. The games should be made to need good computers and if you don't have a top of the line one, YOU UPGRADE! They shouldn't make them game crappy for the poor people.

No actually it doesn't sound like a load of crap, it's interesting to hear stuff like that from the mouth...er...fingers...or...well...anyway, to hear it come from a mapper. So I imagine you just have to try to strike a balance between "danger" and "safe" zones?

I know what Sierra is trying to do -- Lower their ratings...

"RANDY, TAKE A LOOK AT THIS CHART! OUR RATINGS ARE GOING UP! PEOPLE ARE BUYING OUR PRODUCTS LEFT ANR RIGHT!!! WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING!"

"ALRIGHT GUYS, LET's ADD A ROCKET LAUNCHER TO THAT NEW GAME WE MADE, YOU KNOW CZ! YEAH! AND HOW ABOUT YOU BUMP THAT RELEASE DATE DOWN TOO! LET's SEE HOW ABOUT....JANUARY 2003! THAT SOUNDS GOOD! YEAH I LIKE IT!

                      <Next Day>

"GOOD NEWS GUYS!! OUR RATINGS DROPPED 82%! EVERYONE HATES US! LOOK AT ALL THE HATE MAIL! WOO HOO, GOOD WORK BOYS!"

...and piss everyone off at the same time.

Oh yes, one more thing. They are making a new engine. They aren't building on the HL engine anymore. <http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?/counter-s

Personally I think they are waiting for CS:CZ for the holiday season because they know they will make more money then, than now. In all seriousness it's more about money than anything else. I'm sure most of you will still buy it at that time like you were gonna buy it now, and if you don't.....your a rebel =)

                        Just my opinion.

All I've got to say is by the time it comes out CS2 will probably finished with all CZ's Delays. Oh well, luckily i havent given up yet, but I'll go back to playing Counter-Strike for the next few months. It is still the best game anyways.

Hopefully more delays mean a better game. But honestly I am far beyond caring about CZ anymore. By November im gonna be looking at a more non-violent game. The Sims Online! Is gonna be great.

America's Army will just rape up CZ it looks about the same and it took MUCH less time.

Counter Strike is not going to be the leader in only gaming much longer. Do you honestly think a FREE and good game will not win?
