Well that makes them total god damned idiots. Java, in this context, is just as "lightweight" as PHP. PHP isn't a scripting language; it has functions and classes.

They can't even word a press release right and all of a sudden they're the best programmers in the world because they use a slow programming language. Wow.

You pay for a service and you get a free gamers.com message board. What a deal! Clearly your money is going to good use.

If you need a professional website, you don't *buy* a cookie cutter website. This is PHP-Nuke in window dressing, under a slower management system.

And you know what the best part is?!?!?!

You can't view two Xios pages at the same time.

Yay, make everything use sessions and cookies so those who want privacy can't look at your clan site.

      Professional

      Or just lazy and amateur.

      Here

      http://www.xiosgaming.com/xios/selectGr...D=55&gameID=1

      Then here

      http://www.xiosgaming.com/xios/selectGr...ID=9&gameID=1

Go back to the first window (neRve) and click on "roster." It'll show you the CK3 roster, the second site.

      .do not diss PHP.

Looks like a rip-off to me. Anyone can learn PHP for free (yes, you may buy a book and pay but lots do without) so to charge $20 a month seems a bit expensive. And also, what is the point in doing it in Java - why not just write a CMS like PHPNuke but design it for clans.

That also makes it impossible to link people to anywhere on your site besides the main page.

                      198 more words. Nice touch.

For $9.95 a month I could get a domain and produce my own, better looking / more functional website.

                      User list management, woo hoo!

This service offers little more than what a pen and a pad could do.
Actually, there are cheaper hosting prices for clan websites, for 13.50, you will get a years worth of 50mb hosting with barely any restrictions, PHP, SSI, ASP all allowed. If you can't design a website, let the pros handle it, for as little as 40 bucks you get a good package which includes a professionally done template. Go get it at http://clanpimp.net

I'm hosted by clanpimp too @ http://knifingninjas.com (I created the site) and their domain (.com) names are 12.95 a year. Oh, and they also give free 20MB hosting for clan webpages only, pretty awesome service and excellent technical support.

Our clan uses it and its awesome, now we dont have to waste 300 for a professional site!
That $300 is a one time fee. and in the long run it looks SO much better. Not to mention, if you talk to the right web designer, they will even update most of it for you when needed.

I don't really care if one service is better than the other, or not; Xios simply doesn't work that well.

If they fix the bugs and remove the PHP insult, which is unmerited considering their Java seems to be failing them, then I wouldn't have a problem with them.

Well, they also need to say that the momentum is higher, not stronger. Snort.

$9.95 month and you can have a "professional" website which looks like everyone elses.

My personal preference is Java over PHP (despite knowing PHP much better) simply because of the flexibility and cleaner language design. That said, for clan websites (or most other websites really) it's like hitting a gnat with a sledgehammer. They're right, PHP is lightweight, but is that such a bad thing? Lightweight tends to equate with speed, both of development and execution.

In the case of xios their J2EE buzzword technology doesn't do them any good anyway. To be honest, with how static most clan websites are there's really no need for anything even as complex as a MySQL-backed site with PHPNuke (which is so ugly and slow it makes me want to toss cookies). Get yourself Movable Type and maybe some perl CGIs to report the status of your server. In reality most clan pages are so sad they should probably just take them down.

The saddest thing about xios is that they haven't done anything cool here to justify their heavyweight technology. I have a bunch of ideas, but xios isn't getting them from me for free :P.
