*Steam requires a Broadband connection. Term "broadband" refers to any Internet connection capable of sustained throughput of at least 256Kbps. We have designed it to deliver the optimum experience at 384Kbps. The technology will work at lower speeds but the experience will be slower and may require longer waiting periods before content is available. The only forms of phone line transmission omitted by this restriction is ISDN (128Kbps) and traditional dial-up modems (<56Kbps).

Two things...
Could you tell us, in layman's terms, how your Steam broadband deliver platform will operate?
Lombardi: Right now, Steam is in beta with over 125,000 users. When we released CS 1.4 we removed the wall between the beta and the public, so those users playing with Steam could play against the other one and a half million gamers on Counter-Strike.
But, there's a little bit of confusion that I'd love to clear up [laughs]. The Steam underlying service is not going to introduce a pay-to-play model. I like to think of Steam in two ways. First, there's the underlying service or version control, that is, patches and upgrades, anti-cheating, the tracker, the instant messaging service. This part is free if you own any of our games already. Second, there's the commercial part of Steam which is, for any of our games you don't own - or if you don't own any of them - you can go online and set up an account to play them. What we haven't quite worked out yet is that, do you pay $30 to $40 for Condition Zero and then you own it forever, or do you pay $9.95 [presumably per month - Ed] to get access to everything from Valve when ever it comes out. We're looking at both of those models right now, and one may make more sense now and the other may make more sense in the future. We may try both, but it's up in the air at this time.
Hopefully that should make the distinction between Steam the service, and Steam the distribution mechanism for delivering new products.
The plan was that with CS 1.5 we were going to roll everybody over to the Steam, free underlying service. We're a little behind, so 1.5 will basically be like the other updates that we've done. Those who are on Steam will get it automatically, so I highly encourage anyone on a broadband connection to join Steam, for free [laughs], and get their updates that way. Otherwise you're in the position of looking for the patch and making sure you've got the right version, the right language version, then waiting in line for the server to download. Steam eliminates this headache. It's looking like 1.6 will be the time when we roll everyone over to the free Steam underlying service.
1) So it wont be pay-to-play for CS ever? Good.
2) The right way to capture the most consumer surplus is to charge an initial startup fee which is roughly at market price, and then charge a small per month/play fee to continue producing revenue. This can maximize the total consumer suplus captured, especially if products are highly differentiated and demand is inelastic like CS is...

I think this is really weird. I played de_piranesi, and unless its been changed A LOT-- its not really a very good map in my opinion. It looks cool, but its really really big and really confusing.
Too bad Cliffe has bad taste in maps. I wonder if he just doesn't play CS much anymore and just runs around in maps for a second and makes a snap judgement.Comment

Ugh. Man..Did anyone actually LIKE Steam? I stopped playing Beta 1.4 for a few weeks up until it went live just to avoid that crappy interface.
Valve is fixing things that aren't broke and seriously smashing them to bits to get to fix them again.
Was bunnyhopping such a HUGE deal that we had to go through all of this to get rid of it? (along with other things...I'm not blind) I was the major advocate for roundtimers on actions, like a RPG, but instead we got that weird fatigue and delay. I've been extremely miffed with the lag after the jump and the lag in beween pulling the pin and tossing a nade. Is it just me or when you pull the pin you should be ready to throw...it IS behind your head is it not?
I'm not a jumper by any stretch of tghe imagination, but I'm tired of losing portions of the older maps. Are we phasing out the old maps so that we can keep the new and crappy ones like Chateau?
Any map that requires you to climb is turning into a slaughter. Goin in the appts in italy is a mess. Offices in office are killer. How many times has a single rusher taken out half the team trying to get up two boxes? Whatever.
As for 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6...why are these listed as being the same game?
Why not 2.0 and 2.01 and 2.2?? The gameplay hasn't been affected by any update this much since the BETAS. Its no longer the same game despite what you "anti-whiners" say. Think about it. Its got the same window dressing but noone plays even similarly to how they did before...anyone who says differently is a camper or a liar.Comment
