    CPL uses CS 1.4

Looks like this one flew completely under the radar. The Cyberathlete Professional League has ruled that it will use Counter-Strike 1.4 for the Summer event.

"It is clear to us that the community is simply split on this matter," said Angel Munoz, the founder of the CPL. "The CPL will continue working with Valve," he added, "to analyze some of the issues that have been discussed on this thread."

This announcement comes after a recently closed poll asking members of the CPL forums which version of Counter-Strike should be used at the Summer event. At the time of closing, poll was 59% in favor of CS 1.3, 41% for CS 1.4. The CPL, however, will still use CS 1.4 even if some of the changes--the jumping nerf and walking fixes being the most controversial--are in question by many in the community.

"We already have international qualifiers that are successfully using CS 1.4," explained Munoz. "[We] believe that it is in the best interest of the sport to continue our plan to use Counter-Strike version 1.4 at the CPL Summer Championship Event."

No big surprise, honestly. Killing the spectator element would make the CPL lose focus with fans albeit while making some CPL players happier.

On a related note, during the big 3D vs TAU match a few days ago, walking was used almost all the time. Although the game may be slower because of the physics fixes, the clan members still use. It's only a matter of time before the defensive team exploits this to their advantage: run to the defensive positions before the enemy is even in range because of walking speed. The change in walking speed may not be all that bad for the clan scene, I just believe that the strategies haven't yet started to mature. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

      Woohoo.

How did the 1.3 or 1.4 poll end up? Did they just disregard it? I thought 1.3 was winning.

EDIT: Doh, i need to just learn to read

Damn friggen straight, I cant believe that these people who are whining are spending their time bitching when they could be adapting to the new update. If you dont like it, too bad, go play another game.

There have always been arguments over changes in the latest versions of CS. Why should 1.4 be any different?

The community plays 1.4. Therefore the top players should play.... 1.4. Therefor the tournament should use... (you guessed it) ONE POINT FOUR.

I think CS has grown so much since retail, and there have been so few changes since then, that people have gotten "lazy". For many people, this is their first taste of a real CS change. Well amazingly enough, thats CS for you. It changes. If it didn't, it probably wouldn't have 10% of the community it does now. Just when you think you've mastered the game/reached your limits (and therefore makes the game boring), something changes, and forces you to adapt your style and re-learn. That includes the top players as well.

Of course they are going to use 1.4. It has been forced on them otherwise no spectator. Seems we have no choice what to use. Valve will decide. Of course you can use walking. Is it nearly as effective in 1.3 or the better alternative of camping in 1.4?

Can everyone just stop saying "n00b," please? Chances are if you're voting in a poll, reading websites, and have an understanding of what the CPL is, you're not a newbie.

Postal: offensive teams in the CPL don't usually camp. That would prevent them from winning.

I take it you didn't see the HLTV/demos? Go check them out, it was an awesome match. The link is in the bottom paragraph of the news.

It's really funny when you see newbies calling other people newbs. Ironic really.

I totally agree, but this line makes my head hurt.

I only played CS 1.4 for 5 minutes until I realized it was crap.

What is this I hear about "walking speeds?"

What's ironic is when people call others "newbs" and are shocked to discover that a new version of CS changes gameplay.

Again, this isn't a matter of newbies vs vets. I've been playing longer than anyone here and I am happy with the changes. I am actually getting used to a lowered walking speed. It seems more valuable now.

Allow me to remind you that BETA 1-4 were never simple hop-fests. BETA 5 kind of fosters DM gameplay, but that was nerfed as well. It wasn't until CS 1.1 that jumping really began to spread like wildfire. There are no deep roots of CS history to defend, there's only a gameplay change to argue about.

I guess it would be too logical to debate the actual change's merits and drawbacks, so let's argue about the people who like or dislike the change.

Anyone who says that CS has lost its drama, however, must have not seen the 3D match. That was December, 2001 CPL-level play right there and it was damn good viewing.

They lowered the speed at which you can move and make footsteps to right about the default walk speed and removed accelerating while strafing and moving forward. Now you're forced to walk quite slowler than you should.
