mailbag: newbies

Except for my first day, I doubt I'm still a noob. I mean, I know 1 week isnt enough, most people are noobs for at least 3 months, but I am ussually num 4 or higher on public servers ( I play only in places with at least 20 people, I like crowded places where you can function as teams (one group rushes one area, one group camps bomb site, one group just goes around checking for the other team and shooting on site, etc.

OK, back on topic...



Although I've been playing for well over a year I'm probably still considered a noob because I am the very definition of a casual player. I don't use scripts or verging-on-cheat exploitations of the engine and I don't try to memorize maps and hiding places or take easy, pathetic after-the-bell kills. I'd rather suck while experiencing a beautiful new map than rule on a tired, old one.



I try to play the game as realistically as possible and since CS is presented more as a training exercise than a life or death scenario I also try to play as an affable team member, not some gung-ho deathmatch mousemaster pimplebot.



While I do use custom weapons skins and player/hostage models I take most everything else at default and just try to have a good time. And if my kill/death ratio is 1:1 or anywhere near it (and the spineless AWP whores are kept in check) I usually am.

I started playing CS last November in A+ Certification class at school. The teacher had CS days every couple days. I got my but kicked by all the veterans who'd been playing for years. I tried to instal the ATI patch to the FAIL directory. I thought the M249 was a cool gun in CS. I got better. Now, I play cs_assault and usually own. I like CS for the HL netcode, but the most realistic mod around is Infiltration for UT. (infiltration.sentrystudios.com) Compared to Infiltration, CS can't even pretend to be a realism mod.

In the multiplayer gaming world, I started off really late. It was in 1996, that I finally got Quake......on a Macintosh. As I was sucking it up on Macquake, on a 60MHZ Power PC, standard computer, people were blasting away with Quake 2, with their Voodoo and Voodoo 2 cards. I was jealous at the most, but was happy playing the mod Requiem for Quake. Around fall of 1998, I picked up a 400MHZ P2, 96MB Ram, and a V2 card. I was happy that I had a vast selection of games, unlike Macs with no software support(I like Macs better than Pcs, but Pcs just have more shit). Around late 1998/early 1999, I picked up HalfLife, not knowing anything about the game, except that it looked cool on the box. So, along with thousands and thousands of people, I loved the game. And I loved the multiplayer. It was a lot more fun than Quake, despite it's flaws. I downloaded TFC, and that was great. I used to play that nonstop. But after playing Halflife DM, and TFC nonstop, I eventually became bored with it. It was in June of 1999, I would find the money. OZ Halflife didn't quinch my thirst for multiplayer, so I scanned the modscene at www.planethalflife.com, and www.halflife.net. There I scanned every single mod that planethalflife.com hosted, and found two gems that looked great. One was firearms, which wasn't out then, and wouldn't be out for a while. The other was Counter-Strike, which looked pretty descent. I was looking at mods for new weapons and maps, and thats pretty much what I found. So i downloaded it(Beta 1 was only like 20 megs at the time, so that was good for my 56k), and looked for servers on Won.net. There was like 5 Beta 1 servers, and fortunatly I got on one. This defaintly was a surpriser. Beta 1 played like Haflife, but with new weps, and new maps. There wasn't much of a complete realism makeover that there is now. The damage system, shot system, everything, was like Halflife DM, but you got these great new guns, and maps. I always sucked until recently because I always used the keyboard to play, and never the mouse and keyboard combo. That summer(and until now) Counterstrike was my game. I watched servers pop up more and more, as I played on my favs-Mansion, Siege, Assault, and Weapon Depot.(I hated the desert though) Never gained much skill, but had a lot of fun. That summer I awaited the huge release of Beta 2 in August of 1999, sent me even more into the CS craze. Every beta has gotten me excited since beta 2. Theres always new maps, weps(sometimes), and other shit to look forward too. Not to mention more servers arose, when it got really popular. In the early betas, cheating was defaintly not a problem, and if there was I was oblivious to it. But as the later betas came, things just made the game less fun, and a lot harder. When it went retail, I just feel things have gone to hell from there. Cheating, players that obviously dont give a crap about Halflife, hate, anger, complaining....not really the game that went to hell, but really the community. But all in all, its been a fun ride, and always will be.

In a skill since, I was a newb for years. But playing Haflife and Counterstrike, I was a newb when everyone was a newb. So I never really got that newb feel. The only newb feel I have ever gotten is like Quake 2, or Quake, or Unreal Tourny.

Picking on n00bs, the shame...

I started Counter-Strike Mod 1.3 sometime around october 01... Well one of the first maps I played was cs_747 (damn, that was a bad idea). I kept on thinking that crouching behind seats would actually hide me from the CT's. I was really scared of being shot and everytime I tried moving forward I'd get killed (not like I don't now)... But later that week, I started playing dust... Being a crazed strategic freak, I soon got the hang of camping spots, bomb sites, common routes to take, etc... So after that I got better...



Main things that made me a noob: Uncertain (Friend or Foe?), Scared (Panicked everytime I saw an enemy, afraid to die, afraid to advance into unknown maps), couldn't aim (Panicked), no knowledge (where ppl usually camped, where bomb sites were, how fast each team could reach a spot)...

I first started playing CS about a year and a half ago when some Seniors from my high school showed it to me. We snuck into the computer lab after school and would spend hours on Lan servers. Cs was the first FPS i had played in a long time, so i had to get used to the wholemouse/asdw thing. Those guys consistently kicked my ass, but i picked up quite a bit from them, including how to come up with good screennames: "Gene therapy through incest," "Tilton's Tween," "Killogs, the fragster's serial," etc.

I love CSNATION!!!!!!!!! I want to be just like you rizzuh except for my parents dont want me to grow up to be a cripple that only has the use of his right hand to masturbate and play CS. Hope i get a whitty reply for that. Its always fun to make fun of the webmasters of sites because they cry at night while masturbating (RIZZUH IS MY KING!)
