    state of play

Mr Bond has written his first article for us at CS-Nation. In State of Play, Mr Bond looks at the past, current, and future demographic of the CS community.
As CS progressed through the "timely" BETA stages, it grew in fame as the game play became better balanced, new features were added or perfected and better maps were made. It wasn't until the later BETA's, with the added public exposure CS was getting, that there came along a new type of player. Compared to those who had been playing for some months at this point, these new players were so pathetic, so unbelievably uncoordinated and often so annoying that they could only be described as… n00bs, newbs, or just plain newbies.

The state of play has got worse. I always think that my first game was the best, exploring dust for the first time, its just not the same.

now we have masses amounts of cheaters who are mostly n00bs anyway, :I

I liked 747, cbble and alley the first time i played. When it came round to Dust, I thought it was crap.

But its the only map i really play anymore :]

      heheh.

Cs is not so great now.

        1. too many cheaters

        2. too many crappy maps (eg survivor, 747, torn, etc) , not enough good ones

        3. bugs-a-plenty

n00bs i dont mind, but cheaters have got to go

The n00bs are ruining what used to be the perfect game, or close to perfect at least. There is no other FPS quite like CS. I'm sure all of us hardcore CS players can remember back in the days when headshots were acts of skill and cheaters didn't exist. Whenever i play no and get killed in an amazing way [if someone jumped out of nowhere and headshot me with a benelli M3] I would suspect that the guy would be cheating. Back then, I'd say he's a good camper. =P

By the way, Bond, well-done article. A good, thought-provoking read.

In my opinion, I'd say that the n00bs are a necessary evil. I think it's definitely a good thing that CS is attracting large numbers. And yes, theoretically the n00bs will one day turn into vets.

But as Bond so aptly stated, the nature of CS and its community still permits the more serious and skilled CS players to find havens that allow them to play their game and not be hampered by all the 1337 d00dz out there.

I can understand and sympathize with this point; we should do something about it, though, not just talk. I would strongly argue that now the skilled veteran CS players have a responsibility, if they wish to have an effect on all the youngling n00bs out there and to decrease their numbers. It's their (our? I guess I'm one of these people) job to do what we can to teach those who wish to improve to be experienced, skilled players of CS. As members of this community we have a responsibility to try to improve or support it. As to how we go about this, the easiest way is to set an example with our playing and most importantly, our attitude and behavior. Let the kids be kids, but to stem the tide we should do what we can to support and proliferate the kind of play we enjoy.

i think thats its not so much that cs has lost somehting in terms of the game itself, but more of a mental thing. the longer you play it the less you will like it. this goes for almost anything. everyone says they want to go back to beta 6 and 4 and such but if it stayed that way they would still get bored of it. its inevitable that you will lose that "fun and exciting" feel of somehting new. thats why they keep realesing betas, not only to fix it and make it better, but to give you that feeling of somehting new. although it seems to last shorter and shorter each time i download the new version...

When I got into CS with beta 6.1 the popularity was heating up.I had seen it before but I had never really played it.I became addicted.I loved it up until 1.0.Then things wnt downhill in my opinon.1.1 stuck another nail in thw coffin.1.3 is not even the same game.If 1.4 doesn't make me feel even close to what CS used to be I might be forced to stop playing it.It is getting away from what it used to be:A small mod with great action a a dedicated fanbase. It gets farther and farther from that with every release.

I used to HATE assault and militia, but after playing them for long enough, you start to like them. I haven't been playing long (about 2 months), but I'm getting to know more about the game every day, and hopefully will be able to help some silly n00bs out . The only thing that gets me is people who come on to servers with an anticheat required, get kicked because they don't have it, and keep coming back to get kicked. Makes no sense to me at all.

Oh yeah, and is anyone going to change the skin of the day? It's been that deag for about 3 days. It's skin of the DAY. I don't care how good it is, change it once in awhile . It is a nice deagle skin however, kudos to Jemimus for finding it.

The newbs arent ruining cs. Newbs are fun, they are usually nice people who just want to learn how to play. Its those loser 12-year-old-fat peice of shit-who has no friends newb that hax, they are ruining cs.

Definately hit some good points Bond and Cheetarah. I really don't care about the game that much, what I'm here for, and have been here for 2.5+ years is the community and the people in the community. It used to be that you could trust a complete stranger on a CS server, you could work in a team, and have kick ass fun, without even knowing the guy. Well, those days are long gone. You have to be in a very tight community now days to get that kind of trust. I don't even dare jump into a random pub today like I used to. So many cheaters that you are almost garunteed to find one on any server you join. Which is why I'm apart of Forumthon which is a very tight, mature, no cheat community. We just trying to bring back some sanity in playing CS. D:
