Console games can be made in a short amount of time and be good.
Name another.
And name a good game that took a short time to make. Jedi knight 2 is the only one I can think of.
Anyone know how long CS:CZ has actually been in development? I bet its no longer than your average computer game.
As for long development time and sucking: GoreComment

See, if CS:CZ was an entirely new game, I would understand and be somewhat glad for the delay: Id rather have a bug-free and perfect game thena r ushed-out one. But, frakly, CS:CZ is using an old, easy-to-use (compared to newer) engine and did not even have to do much coding. All it is is basically making a mod that focuses on bots rather than multiplayer for CS.
And Valve has gone too far in pissing me off. They worry too much about fixing hakcs that will never be fully cleaned when there have been bugs in the game form the begining that have never been fixed.
i.e. the way if HL is set to a different resolution than your desktop, when you alt+tab/minimize your desktop is awkwardly set to the games reolution with mis-aligned icons and such (especially is your dektop is a higher res than the game), as well as the icky colored screen you get wyhen you connect in openGL. Also, MAJOR ANNOYING (yet simple) BUGS like Seige's echo sound and office's door stuck sound have yet to be fixed. THESE are the type of bugs I wish to see fixed, not the fix for "Hax's openGL C-Everything Wallhack beta 821.3 revision 2"Added @ [time="1028168266"]
All gearbox has ever been is a mod-maker for halflife that, instead of allowing us to download the game, makes us buy the game. Although this is a smart business move, a lot of us are too simple minded to notice this. Face it, mods like Blue Shift were pieces of crap compared to some other mods yet we still found ourselves paying 50 bucks for it because it's box resembled half-lifes and it had its name.
Id make some maps...
Puffycloud cuold download some pretty models...
My little brother could us MSPaint to draw some 2D art...
Rizzuh could say some pretty things about this "great project..."
Add a cool name and call our company "Geerbox" and include on the game's box a dandy logo that looks remarkably like the HL logo...
...And sell it for 50 bucks.
...It all becomes remarkably clear when you take time off to break the addiction...Comment

SmartMoose... wow, finally someone posts something I can agree with.
Release dates are unfortunately bogus, just as this one we're hearing now is. In all reality, it could be earlier, it could be later, we really don't know. They'll release it when it's done. But yeah, I get really frustrated having my chain jerked around by marketing people who claim it will be released on blah date, and then see it pushed back (aka, "oops, we lied") time after time.
I've seen a lot of mods where the developers put a "progress meter" of sorts on their webpage, detailing what aspects of the game are complete, which remain, and their estimated overall progress on the effort. People don't get nearly so upset about waiting as they do about being lied to on release dates, and not even knowing what the company is actually doing.
I think we'd all be a lot happier if we could see levels of completion, such as "Game engine: 85%, Maps: 60%, Sound effects: 100%, Music: 100%, Art: 75%, and AI: 30%" or something like that (yes, I pulled those numbers from my... er, from thin air), and have them updated every week or so, with a progress log of what they've been working on.Comment

You think them spending an extra month will make the game bug free? Hardly. 2 months? 3 months? There will be hundreds if not thousands of bugs when it is released but Valve has been working too slowly and spending too much time on CS. But the worst part is they still have a release date of about... one or two months for CZ on X-Box. Great job again.
Release CZ tomorrow and the engine is outdated. Release the game in a year and the game is ancient. Release the game when it will be in 2004 and you have trash. The graphics are not that special in CZ and image how crappy they will look when Doom III like engines will be standard.Comment

just because and engine is old doesn't mean its easy to use. now, i might be wrong, but isn't one of the benefits of the Q3 and newest Unreal engine is all the tools that are included that let you do stuff rather than developing a way to do it first? i would think that using the HL engine ( which is quake 2 with buttloads more) would make things slightly more difficult. of course, i haven't done much work with either engine, so i don't know for sure.
But, frakly, CS:CZ is using an old, easy-to-use (compared to newer) engine and did not even have to do much coding.
as for teh resolution thing, i wholeheartedly agree. its reallyfucking annoying, especially when using trillian whilst playing. also, whats teh deal with teh sound cutting out if you alt+tab form in game rather than the menu? thats a big annoyance for me.Comment

once again, who gives a flying fuck about the engine being old? its gameplay that matters, not graphics. if gameplay is good, and the graphics are too, then great, its definelty a good game ( ie warcraft 3). but having great gameplay and older graphics doesn't make fora bad game. look at AOE2. it was 2d when all the rage was for 3d RTS games. but its gameplay kicked the pants off anyting else around at that time, and still kicks ass. so everyone bitching about the engine being old, please stfu.

sorry for the mulitple posts, i was trying to get it all in one, but people kept posting as i treid to add more.Comment

<as for people bitching about "the old engine", fuck that. the engine isn't what makes a game great. look at games like StarCon 2, which still kicks ass, or tetris. you gonna try and say that tetris sucks because it has "blocky graphics". if you say that, then i say nothing, because you obviously aren't worth speaking too =P

You have no idea what your talking about. They could be adding spaceships and submarines... possibly even LADDER CLIMBING ANIMATIONS o0o0o0o0o0o0o... ahem. My point... shut up.
