I think you should research your opinions on mice a little. Optical mice are better, but only if you are using a mouse w/ 800dpi or better tracking. Most optical mice are at a measely 400dpi which actually makes your movements worse. You actually skip a little w/ each movement. There is a new dual 800dpi mouse that was just released by logitech called the dual optical.

It tracks your movements precise enough for gaming.

Read Maximum PC. January 2002 (game controlers article)

Thanks for listening, hope you check it out.

My comp is pretty similar to Acoustic Echo's. I've decided to buy a PCI video card instead of hanging out to get a mobo with AGP.

Fortunately I've read countless CS tweaking guides to get a semi-decent FPS .

Step 1 - add this to your autoexec.cfg

      gl_max_size 64

For other steps um... send me a message or something :p ICQ#18322114

ugh I wrote a pretty long comment and when I hit "post comment" IE crashed. Then when I came back to cs-nation it had tons of these my-sql errors all over the place. Did this happen to anyone else? Anyway....

About the argument of whether headphones or speakers are better, headphones win! I can tell EXACTLY where an enemy is by following their footsteps to the point where its like im wallhacking. I shoot people through walls all the time just because its funny to be called a cheater. Ive tried using my Sony home theater setup but it just isnt as effective as headphones are. The only thing headphones lack in is calculating for height (of course this is impossible with headphones since they only have 2 speakers) but this is rarely a problem. Only map that I have issues with is de_vertigo because I always come a round a corner blazing my m4 to find that the guy is below me, BAH!

I don't know if the price on Hercules XPS 510 is the same in the US as it is here in Sweden, but as far as I know the price is like 1129 SEK, which is like $100. PCGAMER SWE claims it to be the one of the best, and certainly one of the cheapest. So I'd say: Go for the XPS instead of the Klipsch 5.1 (and save $300!).

I love my ergonomic keyboard, it is the best. I disagree that it gives the user less options for binds. Okay it does, maybe 1-3 less, but how many binds do you need? If you have to move your hand at all, its inconvenient, so whether you are moving them across that massive void in the centre of the ergo or just moving it a key length is something you should be able to avoid. Besides the ergo is great for those extended hours at the keyboard typing up code and pornographic csn fan fictions (hey rotten! *blush*).

i think that there should be an article written that argues for the best actual binding setup. i for one have been playing with this for a long time and think that i have my buttons bound near perfection. it involves using mouse1 for forward and mouse2 for reverse. i used to use mouse1 for attack but realized that the constant clicking affected my aim if only slightly.

i dissagree with the comments about optical mice beeing better. I use a boomslang 2000 also and (once you get used to it) nothing can beat it for gaming. With optical mice you dont only have to worry about resolution accuracy in DPI, you have to worry about how many snapshots it takes per second. While microsoft and logitech's new offerings offer as high as 6000 shots per second, you cant beat the accuracy of an analogue ballmouse. Razor took on the challenge of building the ultimate gaming mouse and you will notice they dont use optical. When i play, my palm rests on the desk and my fingertips controll the mouse. Since a lot less movement is needed, i can react (and kill) quicker. And anyways i like my nice to have a nice weight to them, dont like them feeling like an empty shell of plastic. Just my 2c.

Oh, and about the comment about the headphones beeing better because of the way the brain calculating direction by delay from one ear to the other, this is true and false. Its true this is how your brain calculates direction, false that half-life (or any other game ive played) is programmed in this way. Because of the speed of sound in normal life, you would need VERY precise timeings and the size of your head would need to be taken into account or you would get distorted directions. So, untill thats somehow done, a 4 speaker system cant be beat for direction. just crank it up . I wish someone would make headphones that have 2 speakers in each heaphone (one in front and one in back.) This would be the ultimate.

I know I'm going to get punished for this, but what about a joystick. I've been playing with a joystick/mouse combo for years now. It beats the keyboard in every scenario. Even if the game doesn't have joystick support you can use the control software that comes with the joystick to map keyboard buttons to it.

Coincidence or not i am about to buy a new monitor / keyboard / mouse and this guide has helped a lot although I was gonna go Optical all the way =p

1 thing though 19" monitors standard I think not my friend Im upgrading to a 17" and thats £150 ($200 for u yanks) and find that 17" can display higher refresh rates allowing higher FPS graphics card forbidding.

Just my little say =p Article was good though

True but what about $500 graphics cards, a $120 LAN card, $100 modems, $400 speakers, $200 sound cards, $200+ cases, etc etc etc...seems like there's always some unnecessarily high-end product out there for the people who like to have all the shiniest toys.
