kids in the hall did a series of skits about a magical "flying pig" who entertained people waiting in long lines outdoors. he would say things like "hey look at me", "I aren't i silly" and "im a flying pig - how crazy is that!". sadly the flying pig fried to death on some telephone wires and then the entire cast ate him. in a subsequent episode they reminisced about his exploits and his ghost came back to entertain them in a long ATM line.

[copied off my post in another 1.4 forum...sorry for the double-post, I didn't notice this topic. kill it if you need to.]

(don't think any of this is sarcastic, because none of this post is meant to be taken that way. I'm just expressing my opinions)

Strife I must say thanx for the civilized in-depth post. In my opinion it's nice to hear words from someone who's actually played 1.4 as opposed to the rest of us (myself included) who are voicing our opinions and collectively shoving our heads farther and farther up our asses as we all get pissed off about our perceptions of 1.4 changes. I for one am glad you took the time to write an informative post.

However, I wonder if Valve is right now feeling rather stupid about even this semi-public beta...I mean, so many have obviously violated their non-disclosure agreements (NDA's) which, I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) say you're not supposed to talk about 1.4 to non-testers. I don't understand what it is about that language included in the agreement that's so difficult to understand. For one thing, I know Valve didn't want to talk about this Steam thing too much because they didn't want to give those oh-so-cool hax0rs the headstart on cracking it.

Speaking for myself, I can't comprehend why people feel the need to break such explicitly worded agreements. I'm not trying to single out anyone here, by the way. Perhaps it's selfishness, because they feel that their desires overreach those of Valve's in this matter. Perhaps it's pride, because they desire the community's appreciation for the privledged information. Perhaps they just don't care about Valve or their reasons for making a NDA and they would rather do as they please. Following directions is something that we all learned way back before kindergarten and is something that many people these days (not just Valve's beta testers) have lots of trouble with.

I would very much disagree with anyone who says the public has a "right" to know about 1.4, despite Valve's desires on the contrary. It's not up to us to decide who gets this information, it's Valve's to give, and they decided to clue some testers in on the condition that they would keep their mouths shut.

In my humble opinion the beta testers really screwed this opportunity up in violating their NDA's. Next time Valve shouldn't be so trusting, even with such a dedicated and obviously enthusiastic community of gamers.

Hmm this is quite controversial. If this gets too out of hand I might have to take down the article. However I like creating conversation :x

The truth is, they don't need a REASON for making a NDA, they just don't want people writing about how CS 1.4 "is" until they're finished making it. They catch too much flak from the CS "community" on their finished products to turn them loose on something that's fairly obviously a work in progress.

Valve cares about their work enough to not want it judged until it is finished. If they felt any other way, I'd be nervous. As it stands, I'm sure it'll be great.

I think an NDA is a good idea. Why? Well because if you have like 200 people testing it, $20 says that they won't all keep their mouths shut. I am almost certain at least 1 person has told his friend, etc. about CS 1.4.

Like I said at Rant House in the comments section of this article, you can all expect your lawsuits within the next 2 to 3 days

Rizzuh, you have quite the valid point about "authentication" versus "authorization." I've got to re-read the NDA---indeed, I may be in the wrong.

I'd like to give you kudos for your site, as well---it's been bookmarked and checked at least twice daily since I've been playing CS, and it's been an invaluable resource.

Ah, the travails of journalists burdened with "not for the public" information... Good thing the subject is CS and not real terrorism.

Confession time, however---though the rant accurately reflects my opinions, I only pimped it to CSNation because the "News" page of Rant House contains a link to my personal site, The Stouthouse.

Speaking of which, The Stouthouse has a very strict NDA about looking at pictures of our lovely and literate spokesmodel.

I can't, in fact, say if she exists at all.

Keep up the good work, Rizzuh. You're fighting the good fight for a game that many thousands of us love.

nice hack. cant really see any errors in it for a change. the smoothing is a little rough around the edges but its not noticable ingame. not bad at all but to me the text on the side looks anoying and rushed and distracts me a lot so -2 for that. the rest is ok.
