I think Valve, Sierra, and just about every third party vendor take the wrong avenue to combat cheating. Trying to make your software hackproof is a fruitless endeavor. What they should be doing is this....

They should be taking the makers and distributors of hacks to civil court. Any cheat that modifies proprietary software code without the direct permission of the manufacturer is in direct violation of copyright law. Granted most of the better coded cheats don't actually manipulate the half-life software; howver, these cheats could still be successfully attacked in civil court. If Sierra was serious about stopping cheating they could claim that the release of hacks and cheats to be used against their engine was causing them to lose revenue. (I certainly will never buy another Sierra product, and I know many people who would have bought CS but refuse due to the cheating) I'm sure a talented attorney could bring Sierra a win in civil court. I mean, really, what jury would fin in favor of cheaters? ... ok well maybe O.J.'s jury...........

here's a tidbit of info for you (wannabe) "hackers" out there. this is regarding the punkbuster anti cheat program.



it takes a "hacker" 1 hour or more to make a good cheat

it took tony ray "10 mins" max to program PB to detect the cheat

I just signed up to this site, because i used to hack/cheat (whatever the fuck you wanna call it) then one day i just woke up and realized wow this is pretty gay, i remember how much i used to hate hackers when i first started playing about a year ago, and i realized how the other people must've felt (same way as me) it also required no skill. Personnally i would rather die honestly than win cheating. I think its pretty funny when a cheater dies. I think its good that we have these anti-cheaters but they keep trying to close cheating sites down. I think they should go for the cheaters who download it not the people who design the hack. I believe that in CS ver 1.4 they should set it so if a hacker is found on one server he is then link-banned from every server connected. It may seem a little cruel but if people are afraid to get caught hacking then they will stop and the people designing hacks will stop getting so many hits at their sites and eventually slow them down.
