Coalition Against Cheating

A friend of mine sent me this info, here's the good ole' copy and paste:

The situation in the Counter-Strike community has reached the worst level that I've ever seen a game hit. Few people can find a server and have a decent game without the intrusion of a less-than-legitimate player.



It is time that we take a more firm stand against this unwanted presence and fight to reclaim what this great game has lost. For this reason, I have worked with several clans to establish the foundation of The Coalition Against Cheating (CAC).



I ask any clans that feel strongly about the war on cheating to visit the website and become a member. This Coalition will only be as strong as its members.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic but I think everyone knows most clans don't support cheating and making a coalition that does nothing except "We don't like cheating" is pointless. Oh, and the POTD sucks. :P

From their news post it seems they liken "cheaters" to the people that started "Jim Crow" laws because "Jim Crow" laws were exploits of loopholes and so are cheats. I don't know about you, but as a white southern american this is slightly offensive. For this to be a good metaphor the cheating community must be a bunch of racist whites trying to take away gaming from african american gamers, because that is the ONLY way you can make that association. It is going too far trying to equate events in history to cheating. If they can do that then I can say that forcing me to use anti-cheating software is much like Hitler forcing the Jews to wear Gold-Stars.



See I've got this shiny "gold star", this means I'm "cheat free".



And evidently they have started a "war" on cheating. I wonder if this will be as successful as the United State's "war" on drugs. Because it is really hard to get drugs in America ever since the "war" ended.



I don't condone cheating on public servers, but then again it is not my place to tell people what they can and cannot do with their copy of the game. However, I do feel that you cannot compare cheating to terrorism as they do in their news post. There is NO link between cheating and terrorism, to even think so is very assinine.

Tunkey, here's a quick and easy way to sweep your argument off it's feet -



blacks didn't violate the end user license agreement for half-life. Yeah, the one you're required to agree to when installing it.

How is cheating a violation of the EULA? It never says in the EULA that seeing through walls and having a program lock on someone's head is prohibited. Then again, I haven't read the EULA for Half-Life.

3. Responsibilities of End User.

A. Subject to the grant of license hereinabove, you may not, in whole or in part, copy, photocopy, reproduce, translate, reverse engineer, derive source code from, modify, disassemble, decompile, modify, alter, publicly display, or create derivative works based on the Program, or remove any proprietary notices or labels on the Program.



Anybody who tries to argue this needs to reread the eula, or find someone that understands this to explain it to them. People claim cheaters have rights to play cs - nothing but bullshit, and they're violating the agreement they made when they installed half-life and/or counter-strike.

I can agree with some of your points. I'm not going to sit here and say you're wrong and I'm right since that defeats the purpose of having a comment feature on the news posts. I can, however, disagree and provide support for my claims.



For starters, the Coalition is not mean to list a bunch of clans that pledge not to cheat. The member clans act almost as sub-units, each gathering information about cheaters and then reporting to their representative (who in turn reports to the Coalition). What's the purpose of this? To build a central database of cheaters in the community. As someone said above, this type of site seems very typical. This may be one reason why past attempts were ineffective: there wasn't a central place to reference.



As far as my references to the injustices against African Americans and the War on Terror go, I was not trying to say that we should approach it in the exact same way. The primary goal of those passages were to relate the situation to historic events in hopes of providing a better understanding. There are some, maybe yourselves, that are not passionate about the removal of cheaters, and that's fine. If the passages didn't sway YOU towards our side of the fence, maybe it did for someone else.



That's correct platinum-clip, one confirmed cheater so far. We've only been public for 2 hours. After the first hour, one clan submitted a website of 240 screenshot-proven OGC cheaters (PunkBuster screen captures). In addition, another member clan submitted a documented anti-cheat output list containing nearly 300 more WonIDs. Now it's just a matter of getting that onto the site, which will hopefully be done relatively soon. The purpose of the Go-Live today was not to say, "here's a reference, come use it." It was to say, "here's something that can be used as a reference in the future, come build on it."



As for our picture of the week, considering no one in my clan submits anything to me, I'm left on my own to dig through the few screenshots I have. I could always turn this around and say you guys don't do enough comical things in CS =).



I appreciate your commentary on the Coalition. Even if you disagreed, I made mental notes of what you saw wrong. Simply ignoring you would not be wise; correcting what you saw wrong is far more beneficial.

well me and my clan will be joining shortly and we will tell other clans at my local LAN center to join too. i have quite a list of WONID's and was wonderin where to submit the list to-now i know. ill be spreading the word and i hope that this coalition will be effective in the future. as for now...you need all the support you can get.

too hard to read all the comments, but throughout history every coalition has failed... they're supposed to be temporary alliances, and therefore will not achieve it's goal of stopping cheaters or ending cheating, or even prohibiting it somewhat.
