I was at Media Play (or maybe it was Sam Goody?) a few days before Christmas looking for a game to buy my brother (AKA [CG]TheReaper), and I stumbled across the strategy guide section. I started looking for a strategy guide for Giants (I got it with my SB Audigy Gamer, so I don't have a manual for it - I have no clue how to control my teammates in-game) and I saw *gasp* a CS strategy guide. I read through the whole thing, saw nothing that would help me whatsoever (I've been playing since CS Beta 6.5), and left, completely forgetting to buy my brother anything. Only later did I think about the fact that a person needs to be really sad to pay for a strategy guide for CS (whereas you could just download one off, say, CSN or UKT for free and print it out). So, don't waste your money on this thing, I could've written it better.

After all, this is a nation that sold a pet rock

I feel that guides put together on print and sold are a lot better quality than guides made online for free. They also can be used while you're in game without another comp / alt+tabbing out of the game.
Lastly, I don't know about many of you.. but I still respect eXtreme 3.. so what, they lost CPL to NiP? They lost by 1 ROUND. They're still the #1 clan in the US unquestioned.. and if I had $20 I'd get this to see what X3 has to say about the game, etc.Comment

You know, now that I think about it, this is one of the enduring examples of American capitalism. I mean, really, nobody is FORCING anyone to buy the book. We can have a good laugh at anyone who is foolish to drop 20 bucks on it, but in the end if you could write a lump of tripe and have people pay you money for it, you would too!
I checked it out on my lunch break today, and I have to say it reminds me of the way I used to write papers in college (stay up until the last minute, bs for 20+ pages, turn in.). Heh.
I think my only real objection is that people will say "wow, they place high in cpl, they MUST have good strategies!" when looking. Strategy in cs is as varied as the types of people who play the game. I think one could venture that the reason a lot of these 5v5 matches are won is because of the increasing deathmatch nature of play. Therefore, you could have incredibly crappy or unoriginal strats, yet still dominate due to individual deathmatch skills.
My point (yes, this has a point!) is that it's a rather specious brand of reasoning to rate strats better because they come in a book or from a group of people that win tournaments. Judge the value of strategies on how well they fit how you like to play.

P.S. Just to lay it on thick again, I always like to think CK3 was a group of some of the best strategy makers in fps team games. Those members of X3 who are former CK3 members would probably agree. /me waits for their guide, lolComment

You kno Rav.. I'm with you. CK3, I feel, was probably the best Counter-Strike clan of their time. But as you said, some went to X3 when the clan died. This means that instead of CK3, we got X3.. I think we should support eXtreme 3 in their conquest to surpass Microsoft's profit per minute
(ok i just made that conquest up.. but it sounds like a fun idea)
Really though, I think that X3 is a pretty good clan, partly because of the CK3 in it. Just let people buy the book if they want, because as Rav also said "nobody is FORCING anyone to buy the book." So if someone wants to buy the book, let them.
Lastly, I posted a review of the book on Amazon, but it hasn't seemed to have posted yet =\ /me waits for postComment

I find it odd that it took this LONG to put out a guide.
Really though, I agree with many people here, X3 had very little in the way of team skills. They are xtreme(heh, puns are fun)ly good individual players, but they did not play together well.
I would like a guide with a bunch of clans giving arguments for each idea (like the Homeworld strategy guide)
Anyway, my 2 cents.

I can't believe someone would have the balls to say that OGC is more worthwhile than good strategy. It sickens me enough that peopel cheat in the first place, but seriously, if any of them were to play without cheats against me, I'd still beat the shit out of them (I went like 30 & 7 on Inferno a couple days ago, on www.clangrounds.com with my 56k.).Comment

Well. I went to the mall today and spent $20 on the guide. I read over most of it, skipping around a lot. I did find a few things I could use. The maps are nice because I can read them while playing. And yes if anyone cares I am a huge n00ber.
