    VALVe Tests Wallhack Block

VALVe's new beta security module goes after all OpenGL wallhacks. For more info on this new code, check out CS-Nation's preview of the technology. Read this message from Eric Smith to find out how to test it on your server:
We've updated the beta security modules. These beta security modules should prevent all OpenGL wallhacks from working properly by not drawing players that shouldn't be seen. (more info)[break="Read More"]1) This beta test is only for Counter-Strike servers...not Day of Defeat.

    2) During this beta test, we *WILL NOT* be banning anyone detected using an OpenGL cheat ON SERVERS RUNNING THE BETA MODULES.

    3) We want you to test these beta security modules and report any problems directly to us. We're especially interested in problems where players are not being drawn properly. These are situations where they *should* be visible to the player but aren't being drawn for some reason (they're invisible). If you find an area like this (even in a non-VALVe map), please send us as much detail as you can about how to reproduce the problem. A screenshot would also be very helpful so we can see where the problem is occurring.

You can report these problems directly to me

    (mailto:erics@valvesoftware.com).

    4) The password for the beta security modules is still "vactest", so make sure you have...

    -testmodule vactest

...in your command line and restart your server. If you're already running with the beta security module password in your command line, your server should update itself. If you find your server is suddenly having problems try restarting it.

We think we've found the problem some servers have been experiencing when we update the security modules. When the fix is ready, we'll release it as a server update. We'll send more information when it's ready.

Let me know if you have any problems with these modules and we'll look into them right away.

    Thanks.

    Eric Smith

Thanks to Disk2 for pointing this out.

Update: There are some reports of this module causing clients to crash during map changes.

I have a question that has been bothering me.

I read recently (I believe it was on csnation) about global banning, being where if found with a cheat on one server, you could actually be banned form a wide range of servers. This would, if I was a normal gamer, come as good news for me. But there have been instances when, being a willing advanced gamer, I created scripts for myself like buy scripts and one that would automatically choose the skin i wanted when I chose the team (yea simple ones). Problem was, I got banned by csguard several times (reasom being I did not know it was the scripts causing the banning, plus some extra model files that unzipped to the wrong place from WinZip).

Anyways, I feel that I PAID for my copy of Half-Life, and if I incorrectly banned from a ton of servers, I would lose the only remaining playable feature of my Counter-Strike, the baility to play on-line.

I could suppose, although, that in another argument you could explain how other people pay money to run servers for others to play on. That would be a great argument, although when I picture it, there ARE some cheating-allowed serves out there, meaning that in some aspect, a few people DO like to play with (other) cheaters.

My argument is over the fact that I would find that if I was banned off all servers I would have been especially ripped off. "Strabo," a man who happens to be my father, plays counter-strike, and visits the comments section often, will always sometimes come home to find I got him banned off his fave server, because I have played for so long the little 12 year old boys who have admin at the time claim "there is no way he can't be cheating" yet they have tons of anti-hack mods attatched to their server anyways. They ban me, and thereby also ban my father.

If there IS a global banning function in the works, I am very against it. People may pay for me to use their server, but they don't pay for me to use every server in the world. Plus, Valve does pay for the servers at all. I can say this because, in all aspects, Valve does not HAVE to upkeep Counter-Strike, and could be working on better games that hopefully aren't using the Quake 2 engine...

                gg

if it will work like HLG's wallhack block or better it will be good to stop cheaters :)

make these modules public fasta as you can, and cheating will be really near to its end in cs.! woot

First of all, VALVe does maintain Counter-strike (such as updating the VAC module which is why it is so ironic you mentioned this). Also, all you have to do is reinstall half-life and counter-strike and you should be fine.

The problem is that many cheats make wallhacks by displaying "images" where the sounds are coming from (where the image size would be based on the amplitude of the sound, and the direction where the sound is coming from).

And they suck miserably. Its almost a disadvantage, or so ive heard.

In theory, I think such a hack would not be a disadvantage.

If you can play well with just hearing the footsteps, wouldn't you be much more precise at your predictions if you could see on the screen exactly where they were?
