It looks really awesome, but maybe they should start re-doing some older maps to try to get some more life breathed into them, like de_dust for example.. everybody basically started off on this map. And now its pretty much gay for anyone thats played since like 1.0. I've been playing since beta 1, and I think that it's time for them to change dust so that maybe it'll start to be played in non-newbie pub servers.

Hmm, my opinion on this one is constantly changing.

On one hand, I'd LOVE Dust to stay popular. The day it loses the #1 spot, I will feel a bit empty, and envious (for a while) of whoever made the map that takes it. But really, it's just a map - it makes no difference to my casual day-to-day life, and i'll get over that easily. It's had it's fair share.
But on the other hand, would Dust really be Dust if it were changed? Dust's image has been literally baked into the minds of the players - for some I can only guess it's as significant to CS as the colour orange is to Valve, or the cyberdemon to Doom and/or id. Changing it would cause some outrage and would offer little in return. Even a texture overhaul would be pointless. Change the layout and you lose Dust - you get Dust version X.
Maybe when CS2 is closer to release I'll be asked to make a new Dust for it. Perhaps not. Something new is needed. I have little doubt that someone will recreate Dust for CS2, and it'll look and maybe play loads better than Dust for CS1, but I don't believe it would reclaim it's ancestor's crown.
So, in a sentence, lets let Dust retire gracefully as maps like Inferno are given the chance they missed out on first time round.Comment

Dust has really gotten to the point where it WON'T retire gracefully. The map is the proverbial dead horse and the people playing them aren't happy unless they can beat it, fuck it, and give it a rigor mortis enhanced reacharound. Dust is the unholy product of an unnatural union between 2forts and q2DM1. We're all screwed, and you're to blame. Thanks, assknob.
Dust wouldn't be dust if it were changed. That's the whole point behind changing it. If you can't get rid of it, you might as well try to make it more tolerable. Keep the basic outline to keep the tools happy, but with a few added incentives for multi-celled beings to not ram their coffee mug into their ear every time it comes up.Comment

That version of inferno really does look good, gj. At least it doesn't look like a dust clone anymore.
The problem with replacing dust is it might fall prey to the "New Coke" syndrome - even if the new version is better, it could be boycotted/ignored simply because its not dust. Personally, I don't see what all the fuss about dust is about, but then I feel cs_ maps are more "Terrorist/Counter-Terrorist" than de_ maps (which feel more like army vs army). Dust is a good map (as is dust2) but it takes away a lot of the focus from some of the other less-well-known maps (they know who they are
).

Fair enough, but i'll be expecting bigger things then when cs2 or maybe even 1.6 comes out then. So don't let me down :)

Looks very nice Narby. Inferno isn't a map that is so "classic" that changing it would be sacreligious. :) Glad to see a more pleasing feel to a very fun, well designed map. Looks like it may up being much of what Torn could have been, but wasn't.
And to DaveJ, I have to say, even if dust is considered overplayed, it is for a reason, and I still love the map. When I think CS, dust is always the map that comes to mind first. I wouldn't pay attention to people like mouth, who try to insult and criticize everything, no matter how good it is, just for the hell of it. Yeah, dust has a certain ugly element to it, but somehow it's exactly the right feel for the map.Comment

Dust will be 2nd place when valve grant fy_iceworld official status
BTW narb, you should really learn to texture. It appears that the themes of your maps are restricted to texture sets that are available. Would inferno exist if avanti hadnt of been made?Comment

Of course i was joking, but 14th place isnt bad considering it isnt official.

The face lift looks fantastic. GJ.
About Dust: I too am sick of it....Of course, I'm sick of water, too but I can't stop drinking it. ;-]
I've always been rather amazed at the maps most people prefer and I think popular taste tends to be rather generic. I've seen some good maps (IMO) die fast and some mediocre (IMO) ones seem go on and on and on.
I think it's a bummer that more unique and interesting maps (IMO) like chateau, piranesi, rio, legato, etc... have to take a backseat to even the crappiest of maps like vegas and estate.Comment
