Wow you must really be great then. I too was in the ATC and and did all of the above and more. However the weapon is not the SA80, it is the L98 Cadet GP Rifle, with no SUSAT sight or semi/full auto function. You moron. And the elephant gun you refer to is the L81 7.62mm Cadet Target Rifle. You obviously don`t know that much about guns do you?

Believe me CS doesn`t teach you ANYTHING about shooting. Not a dickie bird. Only proper instruction on a range can do that. With respects to the DC sniper, he has obviously had some formal military training at some point either in the US or abroad. You don`t just pick up a sniper rifle and shoot someone at range with precision. Remember the IRA sniper that was an ex-US Army Green Beret or the member of Al Qaeda who was a former US Army sergeant? My bet is he is either ex-US Forces or a someone who has received training overseas.Comment

There are a lot of "sniper rifles" that are semi-automatic, alright? Even the beloved Barret "Light Fifty" .50 caliber M82 sniper rifle is semi-automatic.
Bolt action sniper rifles tend to be slightly more accurate than semi-auto rifles, but at typical ranges it really doesn't matter, and the semi-auto functionality is more useful.
Many rifles can be considered "sniper rifles" due to good balance and accuracy. However, rifles that aren't considered sniper rifles can still be used by a sniper, as the term just denotes shooting from a concealed location usually from a distance. Got it?
And for reference, the M4A1 and M16 in real life can be put in single shot mode, which would be perfectly fine for "sniping" though the M4 is a bit more accurate, while the M16 has a bit more power.Comment

He also said that you could train with certain rifles that fire the bullet in a short period and make the shots he has made. I'm only restating what a expert in his field has said.Comment

Yes, real snipers do TRY to aim for the head but on some occasions it isn`t always possible so the chest is another option. There is no black and white, right or wrong answer to the argument, it is all down to what occurs in the individual situation at the time.
Most police sniping occurs at about 100 metres or less, as the officers don`t have to worry about being detected by the suspects. The suspects are usually holed up in a location and won`t want to come out to attack. The snipers are also protected by inner cordon officers on the ground too. At this range, with a powerful scoped rifle, headshots are easier as at a range of less than 100 metres you don`t have to worry so much about windage or bullet drop. You can also use accurately judge wind speed using various devices that would give your position away normally if you were trying to be covert.
Police snipers are trained to aim for several primary target areas. The Medulla Oblongata nerve cluster at the back of the neck is the favourite. If it is severed the body will just drop as all main nerves links to the brain will cease. The others are a shot through the eyes or the bridge of the nose. A shot in either of those places will go through the head and sever the Medulla at the back of the skull where it branches out to the brain. Another target area is the small nook behind the base of your ear lobe. There is a nerve there called the Mandibular that can cause similar effects to the Medulla being cut off if it is severed. Shooting people in the forehead is a Hollywood fallacy. Several people have survived having being shot there as the bullet has lodged inbetween the frontal lobes and not caused permanent damage.
You never limit yourself to just one target area, or just one approach to a situation, as any variables to that situation will leave you stuck. You have to keep all your options (and target areas) open to be flexible and adapt to the situation. It is true what they say - no two jobs are ever the same.Comment

Well said Swackhammer. Only thing you have to be really careful about with headshots is hitting an area that causes muscle spasms, in situations where the target has a weapon pointed at a friendly. I've also seen police snipers shoot weapons from people's hands (completely destroying the gun), though a good opportunity to do so is very rare. I think it's safe to say that a skilled sniper hits where he aims, regardless of where that may be.rizzuh wrote...
