hehe, that interview has made me like 3d-mike alot more.

Altho i do like maps like dust during match play, i could do with something more when playing on pubs. i dont think they should get rid of dust because that would irratate lots of people. But maybe take out more of the not so played on maps not because there bad maps but because times change and people need things to change more often to keep them entertained, but not too often . maybe valve should start a poll and cs players vote favourite custom maps and there least and maybe exchange a couple.

But then again they would never have to touch cs again if they added cs_rio into the offical maps , hehe :)

narby, do valve seriously consider 3rd party maps for future cs updates?

I consider myself a decent mapper but i've never bothered with cs cause ive always assumed than since it wnet retail 1.0 it was a closed shop.

Its always been a mystery to me why unbalanced and generally unpopular maps such as 747, assault and siege have survived for so long, while masterpieces such as musuem and volare arent given a look-in.

im not a fan of volare, its a great looking map with cool ideas and all that, i just dont like the way it plays. musuem, rio, and a great GREAT custom map, cs_ncruins2 should all be official maps with some quick visual touchups. of course, n@rby should just get permission from the creators, retexture, add a lamp or two, and submit them to valve and they'll put them in :P

It's all a matter of taste. I find assault, siege, and 747 to be very fun and enjoyable maps. I think you are confusing your own tastes with what the CS community wants over all.

Then again I actually didn't mind as_forest that much, so I don't particularly take offense to any maps.

Sure 747, etc have their fans, just like any map. My point is that these maps are unbalanced and from my experience result in the servers emptying. In the beta stages gooseman and cliff were quite strict and quickly replaced the bad maps with nice shiney new ones. Not anymore.

While there will be people who scream "NO NO that's my favourite map!!!" if a certain map is considered to be dropped, there will be some people like that for every map.......

Imagine if you did that for dust....... the cs world would go ballistic.......

Everything is like by some people... be it vegas, 747 or checkers (hehe sorry couldn't resist), and they will be vocal if it is suggested that what they like should be removed. For the benefit of the mod, they should be ignored to give the majority what they want...... New exciting maps to play.

If the majority were given what they want, new exciting maps would NOT be included. That majority is the exact reason why the map cycle of most servers goes from Aztec to Dust to Dust2 and back again while Backalley gets ditched completely and Train hardly gets played.

It's not just a matter of having a "safe zone"; the majority just wants maps to do all the thinking and decision making FOR them.

The reason so many apparently "great" maps aren't added to CS is because they lack the layout simplicity needed for successful public play, and the tactical layout needed for successful league play.

Dust's strength is its simplicity - Simple enough to play DM on, and simple enough for your team to be able to stick together, and work together - Thus satisfying the pubs and the leagues.

Also, most of the user maps that the community raves about are either gimmick maps, or only playable by people who've spent hours memorising the layout. A good CS map should be fully playable within maybe 2 rounds.

People do NOT like having to go through the chore of learning the complexities of a map with interconnecting hallways, overlapping walls, vertical elements... blah blah.

If you DO like that, you're in the minority. And CS needs to appeal to the majority, as it has done in the past. Did you never wonder WHY CS is the most popular mod of all time?

                      'snippet' not 'snipit'

dust gets kinda boring round after round. it's fun for a small scrim though as some of you have pointed out.

The most played maps are the official maps (think of those who bought retail and only go on dust 24/7s)

no it wouldn't. Leaving a map out of the official maps doesn't make it unplayed.

CS had a chance at being popular because at the beginning it was a unique mod. it then GOT popular because the people playing then TOLD everyone else that it was good. People just wandered in from that point on simply because it was the "next big thing". The "majority" don't know their heads from their asses.

The whole "majority rules" thing breaks down when you realize that it's fundamentally worthless for finding what actually makes sense.

i think the cure to unbalanced maps is to unbalance the teams. it makes sense for a lot of the maps to have uneven teams. in maps like assault, siege and militia where the defenders have a big advantage, a smaller defending squad with a little team work should be able to hold off a larger attacking force. i also think restricting weapons available to either team can help balance maps. i don't think CTs in real life would use assault rifles in a hostage situation. unless their the Spetsnaz. (how about that hostage situation in that theater in Russia?) it would be too hard to move in close quarters and the bullets go through walls easily injuring friendlies. i think they would opt for the MP5 and pump shotgun. how does the fallowing sound for balanced? militia with 3/5 T to CT ratio. Ts have AKs (they don't care about killing hostages) mac-10 and pistols and no 'nades. CTs have MP5, shotguns, 'nades and sniper rifles. i thinks its unfortunate that you only see restricted buying on the never played AS maps.

Or, people could just make balanced maps. How's that sound, sport?

nah better off doing what he says with the mp5s and shotguns to give a chance to the CTs ;x

and for the hostage situation in Russia: it's over, they killed half the hostages with their gas and... well that's it.
