Okay so some of what I wrote was complete bull but most of what you've quoted, maybe due to my bad grammar, you've mis-interpretated.

And I didn't say Buddha was the son of god.

Wow this is quite the little debate going here. If I mentioned the jumping changes in 1.4 then this thread could go on forever.

By the way, yes there are historical document that attest to the existance of Jesus at the time he traditionally is said to have been around. It's correct to say that those documents may not attest to the religious nature of Jesus but to His historical nature; His religious nature is an entire other arena of debate. In the same way people surrounding Jesus also have factual archaeological backing to their existance, such as Pontius Pilate and King Herod. In fact there also exist records of when Herod ordered male babies killed throughout his realm (as per scripture, by the way...).

Dangki I can understand and relate to your equation of Jesus' historicity with that of King Arthur or Robin Hood. I would suggest reading C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity for his argument regarding the historical person of Jesus.

In addition, personally I would find it difficult to see people dying, per the accounts of Josephus and Tacitus for example, for a myth. Within about 30 years of that supposed myth's earthly existance, Christians were demanded by the Roman government under Nero to forego their faith and swear to the Emperor, and the many who did not were executed, such as the many Christians lit on fire to entertain Nero's guests at one of his parties. I would argue that belief unto death is the action of people who believe in someone real, not a myth.

Please take note that this isn't an argument for the religious person of Jesus, but his earthly person. I'm simply saying that if Jesus was made-up and didn't really exist, I don't think people would give their life for Him.

By the way, on topic, great calendar!

History isn't religion. I'm not an expert on religion but apparently I know the history of at least two figures involved. Historically, Jesus and Muhammad both existed. This has nothing to do with religion.

No one here is an expert. My information comes from experts, yours comes from no one because you clearly haven't looked into it at all. I'm not saying this makes you stupid, but as an atheist you have no motivation to read up on Jesus. I didn't, either, until I saw the TV show and read up more on it. Hell, my school's history book had a chapter on it that they weren't allowed to teach.

Do you honestly think that the religions just sprang up without a figurehead? That a small group of men wrote the bible years after Jesus died and people just accepted it instantly as fact?

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. This isn't your own fault, but you're acting as if you're brilliant on the subject when you clearly believed that there was no evidence what-so-ever to prove the existence of the two people in question (that I don't want to type the names of again). Please do not be insulted, no one expects you to know everything in the world.

I'm glad that you're an atheist and all, but you should use history to support your case and not say history is questionable. This is in reference to you totally discounting multiple historical sources. Sources form history, history does not just last on its own momentum.

Alright, I'm still resisting (for the moment) crashing the party with a ton of facts and historical references regarding whether Jesus existed, and about Christmas (which is how this all started).

Researching the origins of Christmas, yeah, it's a pagan holiday adapted by Romans (start looking up stuff about Constantine and the Mithraic cult if you're interested). If you're a Christian and are fine with that, then nothing's stopping you from keeping it. I don't choose to personally, but I doubt you're all dying to know about my religious beliefs. Just out of curiousity, where did the "three wise men" thing come from? My Bible sure doesn't give a number.

Needless to say, as parts of Christianity have gone to other countries and tried to convert their populace, there have been many of these hybrid festivals (Halloween or "All Saint's Eve", the "Day of the Dead" in Mexico, to name a few). Easter has its roots in fertility rites (ever wonder where bunnies and eggs came from as symbols?) to the goddess Ishtar. Look at the Council of Nicea in 325AD and you get the Catholic church arguing whether to keep Passover or Easter, as the change to Easter took quite a while. Again, if you're fine with pagan customs being adopted for your religion, then hey, nobody's stopping you from keeping them.

As far as the existance of Christ, there's a lot of material, but you have to realize that most of it is references from after his death, rather than things written while he was alive. He Himself never wrote anything that's been preserved, so that makes it a bit more difficult. Honestly, the first concrete proof of Christ's existance (assuming that everything written was made up, which is pretty riddiculus given the nature and timing of it), came just a few months ago.

Most of you don't subscribe to Biblical Archaeology Review but this stuff was sprayed all over CNN and such. Anyway, basic idea was a burial box was found, and dated (by leading experts, not just the religious guys) back to the time when the brother of Jesus, James (as we know him, not the same as his Hebrew name, but most names in the English Bible aren't) is believed to have died. Anyway, it bares the inscription that it is James, the son of Joseph, and brother of Jesus. That's not an exact quote... if I wanted to quote it exactly, I'd have my brother read the Hebrew to me (well, Aramaic technically). :)

Basically, according to all experts in the field, there isn't any doubt that this is referring to the same James that's recorded in the Bible as being the brother of Jesus, and the son of Joseph. The reference to Jesus then is pretty solid, and they've already verified the date that the inscription was made. You can read a bit about it here.

Anyway, as much as I'm tempted to write quite a lot more than this, I'll resist for the moment, as I don't want to waste all my time and end up feeling suicidal like rizzuh. :)

And a thought to rizzuh. Yeah, I can understand how you can feel like some atheists make others look bad, but the flip side is true, as it's no different among religious people.

Well, great Calendar Threeboy, even if you did incite the CSN members to riotous commenting and such, heh. I like the focal blur effect myself, as overly detailed pictures combined with the transparent background on my icon text (in WinXP) make the text more difficult to make out.

LOL, I can just imagine all the sacreligious things you could do with a CSN Jesus wallpaper... heh.

Well, there's not a whole lot of other directions this discussion could take. The options were:
» Tell Threeboy that he's so good he's probably an illegitimate child of the gods... oh wait, that's not where we want things to go.

» Have a flame war over "n00bish low-res versions for sux0r fag computers that shouldn't be allowed to play CS kthxpwnedrofl" etc. No, we don't want it to go there either.

» Make fun of Canada for celebrating boxing day. That would have been the best option, as everyone loves making fun of Canadians. Even they love it, so long as they're specifying the other Canadians who are living on the other side of the Quebec border.

» Debate the historicity of a guy named Jesus living roughly 2000 years ago, without getting into the validity of what he's reported to have said.
Sure, it's not the best option, and it's not like anybody is really going to be convinced of anything (because face it, ignorant people tend to remain ignorant because they don't care enough to actually study things), but at least everyone gets to tie their religious views (or lack thereof) to CS in some obscure way, thus making CS somehow related to everything in their lives.

Okay, so in all reality, religion and related topics are just easy subjects that practically everyone has an opinion on. Kind of like abortion, capitol punishment, gun laws, politics, and CS1.4+ jumping.
