    C-Strike Success

Halflife.org has posted an new article regarding the success of Counter-Strike in terms of the online community. "C-Strike Success" focuses mainly on the different groups of people involved in the CS community, such as hardcore players, server admins, etc. Here's a tidbit:
Basically I think there are four groups of people a game must satisfy in order to maintain a longer interest from the community; the Average Joes, the hardcore players, the server administrators, and the coders. And I am not talking about professionals here, just the people from the online action gaming community. Here are some things that I think have affected the long lasting popularity within different groups:

nice read. so the round-based play keeps us interested in the game, and respawning games get boring. i see. nice read. nice.

in the first line he says the game is by sierra, pff, sierra just put the cd into the box and slap a big SIERRA sticker on it and sell it. ie marketing.

            anyway,

article wasnt really well written, doesnt go in depth as much as i thought it would.

well i think why cs is so popular: remember the first time u played cs? how amazing it felt? well we all continue playing to try and relive that feeling again :)

The first time I played CS... was on as_oilrig. I got shot about 10 times in a row without ever getting a kill, and quit, because I was a TFC newb and didn't like waiting for a new round.

I randomly booted up CS again later after getting bored of a long span of TFC, and this monkey has been on my back ever since. :) Still remember saving up all my money for a super cool auto-sniper rifle, heh, those were fun times... :)

The round concept is quite true, though. After you get used to it, it's rather nice to be able to get up and run for a drink or whatever in the middle of a map. I've gotten quite addicted to Natural Selection as well, but probably my biggest complaint is my inability to "pause" ever during matches that sometimes run over an hour.

I think one other point is neglected, and that's simply the weapons and scenario. It's a small contributing factor, and alone couldn't pull CS above other games. But you pull out your trusty M4A1, and it simply feels a lot better than your Quake 3 style weaponry, and other games with fictional weapons. It makes sense that the most popular game would contain realistic weapons, though certainly not all games with realistic weapons get extremely popular. Just a thought.

Overall, it's a decent short, quick summary of thoughts.

I'd say the main problem with Natural Selection is how hard it is for the losing team to return back in the game. sure it happens but it's hard when you're a skulk agains 2 HMGs+HA (or 1 lmg+ normal armor vs 2 fades/onos)

I think that the click to respawn sucks. Round system, with wave system (dod) are cool. They just make you don't want to die. (because you'l respawn in 0.005 seconds after all)
