Surely you've been exposed to the ultimate American obsession. No, not Big Macs, lists. For example, IGN's Top 100 games of all time. Well, even if you haven't, rizzuh and I have, and we discuss it, and other lists, in the latest Counter-Point:

I don't get the point of top game lists. It's either going to focus on quality or focus on the past. A lot of games have made leaps and bounds, but I can't think of a single way that Wolfenstein is better than No One Lives Forever. This timeless gameplay nonsense is a load. It would be like having a list of the top 100 cars and having the Model T come in at number one just to give some manual stimulation to Henry Ford's rotting corpse.



Saying Mario is the best game ever is just some trite but agreeable statement. "Look at us, we honor you dear Mario!" Where someone may be able to effectively argue that Citizen Kane is the best movie of all time, Mario is simply out-dated in terms of technology, gameplay, story, and everything else that makes a modern game.

In my oppinion, the greatest car of all time is the Shelby Cobra, seeing how its basically the original true American Muscle car, and its respected as a truly awsome sports car around the world.



Does anyony have the TV station G4, a 24-hour gaming network? Because they're 100 greatest games of all time ranked CS at #4, with Zelda coming in at #1, and Doom at #2. :P

my number one game is liero, into wich went no trouble making, has no storyline or depths, no graphics, no flashy stuff, and no even internet support. now how subjective is that?

making a list like tat is just fighting boredom, just like counting your money, shaving the inside of your bottom or clipping your toenails in a perfect circle.

Reading that article was definitely an excercise in CSN schadenfreude to be sure. :P



Anyway, I'm thinking asspennies had the more enjoyable responses this week. I came up with a list of reasons why:



1. He actually talked about something other than NOLF NOLF NOLF NOLF was so great love NOLF is the best NOLF LITHTECH NOLF etc.

I agree Nighthawk, but to say that Final Fantasy X was the 5th worst [whatever] of all time is preposterous!



The main character did sound like he was going through puberty, but I loved the game. It's the only one that's getting a sequel, so HA!

Wow, that IGN list is good for a laugh. Here is my PC list, as to where they went terribly wrong:



#032 - Half-Life

#044 - DOOM

#083 - Half-Life: Counter-Strike

#094 - Wolfenstein 3-D



Is something missing here? There was this one game released, actually, 3 games, a series called QUAKE. These games were stepping stones for todays FPS games. HL was modelled off Quake(not sure which one) and id's Wolf 3-D, as well as DOOM, are ranked ridiculously high. I do enjoy console games, like #002 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or #005 - Super Mario 64(I've only had a sega + n64 + xbox). But I'm not sure those should be ranked so high in comparison to the others. Sure, they are up there, but include the PC games.



And a few console games that managed to beat those above:

#020 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 - #20 of all time?

#022 - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - lol? this isn't even funny.

Umm, IGN lists is very weak. PC Gamer had the best game of all time list like 2 years ago and it was alot closer to reality as far as PC games go. First they made the list up with their own views, then they ask the readers to vote for their fav game. Both List HL SP was 1. And they said the readers votes for HL more than doubled the 2nd place game which I think was Starcraft.



I forget which issue this was, but clearly HL SP changed FPS games and actually made it worthwhile to continue to next level until the Alien levels. AI was better and story was actually thought out. HL SP set a new benchmark for other FPS games.



I think TFC's gameplay was more interesting than the rinse and repeat of Quake.
