The only objective criteria for games are their sales figures. Everything else seems more or less subjective.

Things like playability, longevity and relative success should be considered in such a list. After all, CS is a four years old game (and that's really old), but it's still one of the most popular games in the world. It should have been higher up on the list, and a lot of the games on the list shouldn't have been there at all.

I understand that the listmakers miss the good old days, but how many of the games on that list were made for Nintendo 8-bit or SNES? At least they could have put in some SEGA games to avoid being accused for discrimination. And yeah, why not, maybe one or two more games from the last five years?

Lists like this one are just useless crap anyway. All they do is make people disagree.

          Rizzuh casually mentioned..

35mm film probably did a lot more for people than DVD, but DVD is superior in every single aspect. It would be ridiculous to say 35mm should top the list simply because it changed things 'more.' Mario introduced the world to casual gaming, but in the end it was thin and shallow.
Couldn't agree more, for example, Mario 1 on the SNES had a much larger impact on platform gaming than Mario 3 did. But if you were to say Mario 1 was better than Mario 3, you're obviously suffering from some sort of mental complaint.

My 2c on why this list is bs. The only 2c u'll ever need

              Elite

Ok, so many good points about the validity of "lists", but the simple fact that Elite is not on this list, makes it completely redundant. Whether or not it has been (the original incarnation) long superceeded, to leave it off an "all-time" list is just ignorant. When you make a list of the top 100 movies, you don't forget Citizen Kane do you? No.

              Syndicate

I could say the same for Syndicate, but I won't. Ok I will there.

              Random BS

#099 - Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss

Mmm, nice rating for one of the first FPS's, even predating doom, and the very first RPG FPS. Not that being first makes you best (i.e. perhaps C&C red alert should outrank C&C, although I wouldn't say the same for Civ 1 and Civ 2), but this was and is an incredible game.

              #046 - Conker's Bad Fur Day

Why is this on the list? Because it was the first adult game for Nintendo? Clearly they overlooked Peek-A-Boo Poker.

#045 - Alone in the Dark

45? There are 44 games that rank higher than the beautiful horror of Alone in the Dark? Oh dear. Put down your nes controller, step back, and out of the window.

I will now return to the past where I belong.

That list is really messed up. LOL in my opinion, Goldeneye 007 just sucked. WORST GAME EVAR!!!!!!1!1!11 and before anyone says "well youve never played it n00b so stfu" i bought the game when it first came out and i said, "this is crap. where is the crosshair? whats with the lock ons? where are the multiplayer bots?" when i saw the Perfect Dark reviews and screenshots i said "wow this will kill goldeneye this game fixes most of the crap from it" then, perfect dark disappointed me too. The multiplayer was much better, but the distorted vision shit just royally pissed me off, and it stayed forever. i mean, wtf? then shortly after i bought cs and all is well.

What kind of an idiot puts Final Fantasy X instead of FFIX on their top 5 worst games list?! I mean, well sure I respect you didn't like FFX (which I loved :) but, haven't you played FFIX?

If you placed final fantasy X on #5, you should of placed FFIX on -104.

While this usually is true you can't forget about Goldeneye. Goldeneye is probably the best console fps of all time and without it games like Halo might have never existed. If only Rare hadn't lost the Bond liscense. Oh well at least they got bought by Microsoft. Hurray for monoploy.

is red alert in the list? the original i mean.

what about great console classics such as Contra and Battletoads.

my fav top 10 list has to be (based on the amount of hours playing, ie adictiveness):

                            1. CS (!)

                            2. Doom (all versions: 1, 2, ultimate, TNT, plutionia)

                            3. C&C: Red Alert (original)

                            4. Quake 1 (including 1000s of custom maps and mods)

                            5. Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Game Gear (all versions)

                            6. Starcraft

                            7. Wolf3D (1992 original)

                            8. GoldenEye for N64

                            9. Blood (monolith's first 3d shooter)

                            10. DeathTrack (1990 original)

so these games above are ranked for me in terms of hours played, but for long lasting effect HL would definitely be in my top 10 list! its just i did play it, but not that much.

Duke3D should also be in the list of lasting effect games for me.

Pretty sure he was making reference to film concepts based on games, not the other way around. Goldeneye the game used the film as a setup, it did not inspire the making of a bond film. I.e. Tomb Raider the game inspiring (well inspired marketing) the crapulance we saw on the big screen.

Not to mention the film based on what is allegedly the world's greatest game ever: Super Mario Bros.

Or that Mortal Kombat film. Or Resident Evil. Or Tetris the movie.
