"It's been absolute hell. It's been really awful," says Susan Ives, a designer from Washington, D.C., whose video game-crazed son turned against her one day.



One night earlier this year, Ives tried desperately to get her son off the family computer where he was playing Counter-Strike over the Internet. She asked nicely, she demanded firmly. Finally, she reached for the computer's power button and his game world came to an abrupt end. Enraged, he grabbed his mother's wrist and twisted it. He then picked up the coffee table and threw it across the room, smashing it against the wall.

I'm imagining what people would think if you changed the scenario just slightly...

One night earlier this year, Billy tried desperately to get his dad off the family computer where he had been designing the architecture of a large corporate office for several hours without saving any of his work. He asked nicely, then he demanded firmly that his father get off the computer so he could check his email. Finally, Billy reached for the computer's power button and his father's virtual office building came to an abrupt end. Enraged, he grabbed his son's wrist and twisted it. He then yelled, grabbed his son and shoved him into his room, slamming the door behind.



But oh no... the father would be justified in being angry over his hours worth of hard work being destroyed in a moment by someone impatient, where as a gamer, having his hours of intense concentration for the winning of a particularly challenging match shattered in an instant, has absolutely no reason to be upset.



I'm not saying that it's at all proper to act like this, but it's hardly "video game-crazed" behavior, but general lack of anger management that can be seen in just about any group of people, whether younger or older.



Kind of funny to see the double-standard, though. Ah well, I really don't expect the leading edge of video games to ever be accepted by the adult community. The parents of today did many things that their parents were shocked over, yet they have become that same role to the next generation of people growing up. It's a typical cycle, only being comfortable with what you grew up with. Granted, some can break out of it, but most never will. So it goes, I guess.



And no, a documentary about the positive experience of CS would likely never fly. It'd be like asking a television network to run a special about the positive effects of gang membership. There may be really valid points, but they're always biased against it because of the actions of the visible few. Not the best comparison, but food for thought anyway.

And Canada is only showing it now, hahaha.

Well, for a TV network to earn money, they need viewers. Since non-gamers think games are kiddie or contain sadistic violence, the news networks play on that. They reassure the viewer's ideas towards gamers, making them feel intellegent and it might even encourage them to come back. If they ran a pro-gaming documentary, it will get low ratings because people will dismiss it as propaganda.

I just don't get all this crap about FPSs turning kids into killers. If some kid plays CS as a terrorist that makes him wanna kill cops?!?! So playing as a mage in Diablo II will turn your kid in a warlock/witch.?? i can see it now



mom: dear, junior seems to love that new RPG we got him for his birthday, its great to see him happy again since he shot up the school with a ak-47 wearing a green jacket and khaki pants.



dad: i dont know honey he spends an awful lot of time crouched over that game, i think it going to his head. I mean only yesterday he dug a pentogram in the backyard claiming it would give him "xp" and +2 spell skill.



mom: im scared look at the way he is waving his hands in the air and chanting!



dad: im gunna do the ight thing and unplug that game right now!!



As our brave father reaches for the power button the son lets put a cacophonus roar and kills his dad with a +4 fireball of doom, slamming his crispy body against the wall. Seeing his mom there desparetly trying to turn of the computer at the fusebox, he pulls out his +3 mage staff wth lighting dama and bludgeons his mother to death.



Another sad story of RPGs turning kidds into sorcerors.

The media inflates lots of things, they called this (or maybe last) summer the "summer of the shark", even tho you probably have better chances of getting struck twice by lightning than getting killed my a shark. People know that lightning doesnt strike people too often, but they dont know that most of the time sharks stay away from humans.

i live very close to where ctv is situated!!!11

but last summer (when i started cs) i played all the time when i was in belgium visiting my cuz then i got back home to my pc whic cant handle cs and plus i had no net.

for a few months for school i didnt play comp, but thn in nov i got a new comp whihc i still have now. i play on and off and i consider mself an OK player. i used to be rather good, quite very good, but i just started sucking lately.

is that even though i play all the time all day, i am not addicted and im not a serial killer or psychpath. my mom reads this magazine in canada called 'Womans world' and they did a section on it, and she is now SCARED STIFF of me, and this i will kill my family any second



the sad thing is, she KNOWS i wanna become a poice officer when i grow up, perhaps in the RCMP or CSIS (canadian FBI), so NO i am not a mass murderer but i would like to give those cheaters a gooooood ass whuppin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know why the always air negative things about... well, everything on televsion? Because no one gives a shit if they air something positive. See, if we had "George Bush had a nice dinner tonight with his wife" on the news, people wouldn't give a shit. But, if George Bush happened to have a nice dinner with another woman, it'd be big news. People want to hear stuff that's bad, not good.



Anyway, since I have LAN, I asked my dad if he wanted to play counter-strike with me. So we did. He found it to be fun. I think people should actually try out the game before they judge. And to think adults have always told us that we should never judge a book by its cover. Morons.

It seems reasonably balanced considering its from a parents perspective. As an older CS player I know that I spend too much time on the machine and I can see how parents could get concerned about there kids doing the same.



It does say the documentary tries to examine the issues and answer the big questions. There are statements like "or will it?" etc.. that are just supposed to be though provoking it doesn't come out and say video games are evil or something.



Personally I plan to watch it and reserve my final judgement until I actually see the show.
