Can't catch wallhacks, but it can eliminate an mIRC plugin.
Who cares? VAC catch OGChook & sound esp users, + HLG blocks wallhacks. It's enough, cheating isn't really possible today.

Yeah, not today, but give it about two days and it will be possible again.

heh... you must play LAN all the time. =oP

HLirc was a good program- my clan was able to check out 8 pub servers seperately, then relay whether or not it was a fun server to go to... no ALT + TABbing, no exiting CS- just type in HLirc and you're set.

It is kind of frustrating how Valve's VAC can kill some good programs like this, but HEY! They have Tracker coming soon! And maybe soon they'll have their own IRC that doesn't get detected by VAC next month... and maybe soon they'll have their own (insert name of program you use with HL here) that won't get you banned either...

...CS was fun. Now Valve wants to become the next Microsoft by killing good programs (HLIRC), making it difficult for others (HLGuard), etc.

...and now Natural Selection is going to be on Steam? GL HF.

in the the 3 hours i was playing on www.fraginwar last night i saw at least 5 cheaters get banned. it was great, everyone on the server laughed and people were a lot more supportive of good play by either team. cries of "cheater" were replaced by "nice shot, lucky bastard".

          keep those updates flowing.

p.s. does kicking HPBs help reduce lag on a small server?

I got kicked by the vac on a server... (just after it was updated!) unfortunately, I'm also on the Cheater's Hall of Fame on the stats pages as a result.... uber great :/ Along with a whole load of other consequences for being marked a 'cheater'.

HLirc was a useful tool... I could chat and play at the same time.. no 'dodgy sound syndrome' from Alt-tabbing a lot. It'll be missed. But for now, we'll have to wait for Tracker instead...

It's amusing to see people so constantly unsatisfied. 2 years of cheat dominance in CS and VAC come out and blocks them pretty much as they are released.

The cheat issues is virtually resolved so you attack valve because their AC system temporarily knocks out a HL irc plugin.

                ya OK.

Eh? Next M$? When were they since trying to become the next M$? When did Valve start trying to sell updates to HL? I thought they did useful updates for free... Unlike M$ who charge for an update as a whole 'new' product ...

I would understand if the VAC caught everything. Or at least 90% of hacks. With a few mistakes, of course, but those would be eliminated. There are still alot of cheats around. Yes, alot less than before, but they are still around. The VAC is a pretty good anti-cheat, however they need to eliminate these bugs. They had the Voodoo OpenGL driver caught as a cheat, they had other numerous mistakes, and now the banning for HLIRC. Not only this, but wallhacks and other smaller cheats are still around. And every week after the new VAC update, there is a new workaround against the VAC.

As soon as the VAC can eliminate 90% of hacks, and not make any mistakes like this, I can say that it is a complete and total sucess. Right now, it's a step in the right direction, no doubt, but not a sucess.

As the French say, you are "une fuckin' arsehole".

You've missed the point. VAC is never ever going to be effective in getting rid of every single cheat. The point is that VAC has already succeeded because the cheat-a-thon that was 1.3 era CS is dead. Cheaters are very very rare.

Secondly, VAC is a brand new technology, and for you to complain that a small minority of users suffered for a very short period of time is not only ungrateful, it's stupid. In addition, Valve should be praised for being so restrained in implementing their system - the ban list, their most powerful tool, is yet to be activated.

I'm going to ignore your first statement. Apparently you can't begin an argument without using some sort of immature and ignorant remark.

Anyway, I never said the VAC was useless. It's very helpful in eliminating a bunch of better known cheats. I'm happy that there are no aimbots, don't get me wrong. I'm still upset, however, with wall hacks. They aren't as terrible as the more publicised hacks, but they still do their harm.

Cheaters are not rare. They've gone down in number since 1.3, but they still hurt and damage the community. Call me ungreatful, call me stupid, but when people who cheat aren't getting caught are getting banned, while people who don't are, that means that the VAC isn't doing a very good job.

I'll just wait and see how the final product goes. I'm sure that the VAC will be an excellent anti-cheat in the future, just not now.

VAC pretty much destroyed OGC which accounted for pretty much three quarters of the used cheats in CS. I think it's been a great sucess, the biggest reason for which is the fact it auto updates without having admins download new builds of the anti cheat software.

Mike I understand your point, I just think VAC should get due credit for it's achievements. It has given back a little trust to CS, something that has been lacking for a LONG time.

Um... 1) it was a broad analogy. 2) Steam = Subscription-based online gaming... some day. It's inevitable. But that's my opinion, and I guess opinions shouldn't be stated in forums =oP
