HLirc Detected By Newest VAC

In an update to our news post yesterday about HLirc and VAC, Disk2, HLirc's creator, has confirmed with us that HLirc is now being detected by the new VAC beta security modules. From his own mouth:

Yeah it is detected. When I released it the VAC didn't detect it, but the new beta does. And with the release of this VAC update I suppose it will be detected on all servers now.



To uninstall it just load mIRC, go to the Tools > Remote menu, then go to the View > HLirc.mrc menu, then go to the File > Unload menu.



Again, sorry about the confusion. I wasn't able to find the problem until some people at VALVe told me to try it with the VAC beta. I'd like to thank all those at VALVe that helped me figure out the problem. When Tracker is released it should include a plug-in system that will allow IRC chat, but for now no more chatting in-game.

Again, you should remove HLirc ASAP by following the directions above, as it is now detected by the newest VALVe Anti-Cheats. A note of thanks should go out to Disk2, however, who was only trying to help out the community with his program.



Update: to make it clearer, HLirc's loading method is detected as a cheat, not the program itself.

Yeah, it's too bad. HLirc worked nicely for the few days it wasn't detected though ;(



The new plug-in system should be great though. From what I've heard--and I haven't heard a lot--it is only in the planning stages now. However, it will surely be worth the wait. It should be easy to port the code to the new plug-in system once it's released with Tracker. That was a good move on Valve's part.

Maby he could help to make it undetcted. I dunno but if i made such a nice program i would at least try hehe this sucks!!!!



Also i thought in steam there was only a steam like chat messneger and a icq feature.. is there really going to be a irc feature as well? i guess they mean you can write plugins for steam maby hehe

i really enjoyed HLirc, but i was overwhelmed with frustration today getting booted all the time, and here i thought there was something fishy with the de_simpsons mappack, at least i know what the problem was.



as far as tracker goes...

does anyone even use STEAM?

and does valve have any plans to release tracker without steam (or is it and i just didn't know?)

First, Eric cannot help me make HLirc undetectable. That would endanger the integrity of the VAC system. As he said to me, even the smallest and seemingly innocent hole can be exploited by cheaters. I completely understand why he cannot help me.



Second, from what I have been told, yes you will be able to write plug-ins for the Tracker system. The way it was described to me is that once Tracker is out, a sort of plug-in SDK will be available for developers. That will allow custom plug-ins (in the form of DLLs, I assume) to be run client-side.



I doubt the plug-ins will have access to anything that could possibly be considered sensitive information about the player and game state, so I don't think there is any need to worry about it being used for cheating. The VAC would detect it anyway :)

From what I've read Counter-Strike and all other VALVe games will be moved to Steam in the next couple releases, so the question about Tracker being released separately is irrelavent.

VAC should concentrate more on cheats then this..

The VAC is not specifically designed to detect HLirc, but the new VAC does see some of the things HLirc does as a cheat. It's not VALVe's fault; they are just trying to stop cheats. If that means HLirc doesn't work that's fine by me.

I had HLirc the day they put it on cscentral and I had my entire clan using it the next day. Great program too bad it ended so quickly, good luck on your future endeavors Disk2.

I hope you come up with another great idea, Disk2. HLirc was a great idea that was stymied by another. I'm sure with your coding skills we should have an AIM plugin in no time at all
