can't exactly take a guy named luftwaffle seriously...after seeing the pianist.

Who he remembered the Steampowered.com download page? - it was there. Linking directly to sites such as fileshack, fileplanet and all of those download sites? I saw it. VIsiitng those sites it said, that Steam was not yet released. But...
I also saw 2 more links added later in the evening directly linked to the downloadable .exe. So Steam did release them for a while. That download page has now been removed and now it says "Steam 2.0 coming soon".
But they had linked to the Steam installer .exe-file. I call that officiall.Comment

I admit that I got my file from a clan mate at about 3 minutes before the actual release time (7PM GMT). I risked the fact that it may have been a virus cashing in on the fuss about 1.6 and installed. Later on, I thoughyt I would go to see if the official file was at steampowered, and although 2 of the links werent there, one definitely did work as I downloaded the file from it! The file didn't work when I got it, but at least it proves that at some point Steam was officially available...

Thank you, I'm not alone. The release was probably a misstake or something, but they did release it there.

Just like the official EA BF1942 site in Taiwan accidently released BF1942 1.3-patch the other day.Comment

10-15 mins after posting the mirrors actually :P Not 2 hours..
VALVE RELEASED STEAM 2.0 BETA ON STEAMPOWERED.COM, WITH LINKS TO VARIOUS MIRRORS.
Valve couldn't handle the load, nuff said.
They removed the link about 2 hours after posing it.
But yes, at 6pm EST, they had download links on steampowered.com to fileplanet, fileshack, etc...
But they took the links down fast. And the mirrors, fileplanet, fileshack, etc. never actually put it up to download.Comment

Well, they are going to release the next update for Steam and CS, so thats good and hopefully the really niggly things will be fixed in the next BETA. BTW, does anyone have trouble with the mouse cursor flickering / disappearing on in the new launcher? Cant wait for that fix to be released in the BETA :)Comment

Yeah, I remember it turning up on the official site - and I compared the leaked file to the 'official' release and they were identical - fact of the matter is, with that many people trying to d/l that much content, you hit 'net backbone bandwidth limits pretty quick. Not a lot to be done.Comment

I don't get it.
I smash an article to pieces, and my mega-quote sits in the comments. LuftWaffle tries to do the same thing, and it gets a newspost.
I'm going to go cry now...
On to the quoting. The interesting fact here is that every time you connect to Steam, you download 100 megabytes of garbage that is meant to test the network.
Heh, I connect and am playing in under 5 minutes on my 56k. Damn I've got a fast modem! *sigh* Why must all of you Steam proponents/opponents make up numbers and try to support your claims with them?
Wwv nailed this before I had the chance to, but I like reiterating the point. Besides, people listen to what I say more than your average poster. :) Early betas of Steam corrupted the cache intentionally, forcing you to re-download parts of it, but 2.0 does not do this currently.
As it's already been pointed out, the difference of a few hours one way or the other really wouldn't have made a difference in how prepared VALVe was for it. I'm a fan of theirs, but they did miscalculate how much bandwidth they were going to need, and that fact became very apparent with this test. That's why tests are good. Better to find that out in a test than have this happen when they're trying to go live with Steam.Simplex wrote..
I had exactly the same experience. Well, not quite exactly. Level load times often took a couple minutes (because of my connection). I noticed, however, that I had near-constant traffic incoming to my computer, so I'm guessing that it was trying to do at least a certain amount of look-ahead caching and such. Wasn't enough to prevent the game from being stalled quite often, however. Didn't play all that far beyond when you see the first lightening guys, though, as I realized I had work to do today. :)
I tried playing Half-Life on Steam (you remember, the single-player game?) and it was horrible.bozer wrote...
bozer, your actions on here have been a shame to yourself and, more importantly, to cscentral. I was pretty harsh with the Half-Life.org article that Luft responded to, but still respect the author of that article. We ripped what he said to pieces, essentially, and he was very mature and polite in his response.
You, on the other hand, have shown yourself to me rather immature, tossing out incredibly stupid insults, and in general making an ass of yourself on a website belonging to someone else. Spoonman was right in what he said about banning you if you do not cease, and I back him up completely on that decision.
If you have any further problem with what any of us have said, feel free to use our email addresses to take it up with us.
Regardless, the original article has been taken down from Half-Life.org for reasons that have not been given as of this time. There is still a reference to it at:
http://www.halflife.org/news/item.php?id=530
I have to feel sorry for the guy, spending all that time for basically nothing positive in return. Well, I suppose appreciate the effort, even if I thought the result was quite poor. Anyway, I'm glad they took the article down, for the obvious reasons.
Granted, I disagreed with a lot of the specifics of LuftWaffle's argument, I did agree that the original article had a lot of flaws. Anyway, the argument is sort of irrelevant at this point in time, seeing as there's no longer an article up to criticize. Hopefully peace and order can now return to the comments... riiiiight.
