What OS are you using? If your using XP right click on my computer > properties > Advanced > performance, settings > advanced > virtual memory, change > custom size and put the initial and the other one to the same sizes which should be half your RAM. You should defrag after you've done it too.

i was kinda hoping for a "fix" to be able to see who is currently alive/dead on the other team when you are alive. its the most annoying aspect of 1.6 so far

It's not annoying! It adds suspense.

Emilik, try switching to 640x480 resolution. Might help,

I do fine with my scout on 640x480, so there.

wont 256 MB of swap (half my ram) be a little low? what happens if more is needed? and why should it be half the ram-size? cannot i have, lets say, 1 GB? I have HD-space :/

Yeh sure set as much as you want. Actually I think it should be twice not half.

                    Emilk... use cl_showfps 1

also... I have a ti4200 on a 2.4GHz machine and the smoke does funny things to me too. It drops my framerate exactly in half (I use vsync... so I go from 85 straight down to 42-- then if I have the net_graph on or 32bit color it can drop in half again to 21). I've noticed that if net_graph is set to 0, and 16bit color is on then it doesn't happen as bad.

Even though you can't see it in 1.6 having net_graph 1 can cause fps issues.

btw, what does vsync really do? :)

VSync makes your game's max fps be the same as your monitor's refresh rate. If your monitor is only refreshing at 85Hz(that being 85 cycles per second) vsync limits your game to that too- because there is no point in getting a higher fps than your monitor is physically doing anyway.

A lot of people's monitors are going at 60Hz in-game. This is because of an issue with XP/2K and Nvidia cards. I use a program called ReForce to fix it, so that I can get back to 85Hz. 60Hz has been proven to cause eye strain. A lot of people will say BS like "your eye cannot detect a difference from 60 to 85fps" I think that 1-they are wrong... and 2-Hz is different from fps, so their argument is pointless.

For me if I set VSync off cs always says 100fps, but as I move left to right there is some jitteriness to the motion, having VSync on gives me a smoother picture.

no prob. I edited my post to explain what to do (download ReForce from this link right here) if you're stuck at 60Hz. Thats my advice anyway.
