The Making of: Dust and Dust2

DaveJ, creator of several famous CS maps (including my favorite, de_cbble), has just posted two new articles on his web page. The articles "The Making of: Dust" and "The Making of: Dust2" take us on an inside tour of Dave's gigantic head and finally we find out about all the time that went into planning and developing Dust (or the lack there of) and Dust2. Here is a little snippet:
...the idea for Dust was taken from Valve. Anyone who had seen the Team Fortress 2 screen shots and video from around 1999/2000 will have noticed the strange similarities between those and Dust.
See, you do learn something new everyday. Now run along to Dave's page and read about the most (over)played maps ever.

Dust 2 was a vast improvement over the original Dust.

Dust is fun for the first 10-15 minutes, than it gets overly repetitive and boring. Dust2 however is always a vast and excitement filled map, which makes me happy when I play it.

I never played dust3, I've played dust4 which IMO was terrible, because it lost the dust\2 feel, and it just seemed to out of place and half-assed together. Whether DaveJ was responsible for Dust4 or not I do not know. It certainly doesn't resemble his work and talent.

Ok, so dust is boring and overplayed and old, and Dust 2 will be, at this rate. Err, yeah.

Anyway, I only wrote those articles because I thought maybe some people might be interested. Oh, and the fact I'm fed up with people asking me how I made Dust 'so good' or whatever, I'm hoping this will explain at least a little that it was more luck than 'skill' (whatever that is). It certainly wasn't experience!

Incidentally, Page8 for Dust (1) is probably the most interesting page of them all. I really DID think of making those changes around 1.2/1.3 time... but imagine how terrible it would have been...

                  Cue whining!

I've only ever made Dust 1 and Dust 2. There are prolly a few 'Dust 3's - the only one I made is the one that most closely resembles Dust 2 (because, well, it is!)

IMHO Dust was one of the first maps in which both teams stood an equal chance of winning. It's obviously the classic map, which defines CS completely. Above all though, it taught all of the Deathmatch crew that CS was about tactics, not rushing and spraying. It taught us all to use sound to great effect; it's still the best way for CTs to defend site A.

Cheers for an interesting article Dave, it's nice to see a developer who is keen to let us into the creative process. By the way, all of the dust3, 4, 5, etc maps suck. The only one to add to the dust saga is de_dawn.

                            That was interesting.

Im surprised that you didn't mention de_dusttoo... who was it that released that early version of dust2? Gamehelper?

One thing I've always wondered is... when going from dust3 to dust2 why was the exploding crate removed? I loved that thing.
