VAC Updates Soon

Apparently our crack news team is busy DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL, so the world has elected me to inform you that Counter-Server has some Erik Johnson quotes about the immediate future of VALVe's Anti-Cheat (VAC). Generally, the word is that VAC will be updated fairly shortly. Here's a bit about Steam's CS 1.6:

Hi, everyone. Just a quick note to let you know that things are beginning to happen again. If everything goes well, we'll be rolling out the first VAC release for the steam beta [Thursday or Friday] (if not tomorrow, probably on Friday).



The anti-cheat functionality of this first release will be identical to that of the existing 1.5 modules, but we'll be activating the new banlist. The new banlist will feature an escalating ban period: the first time a given user cheats, they'll only be banned for 24 hours, but subsequent infractions will increase the penalty (so that by your 10th infraction, you'll be banned for a month at a time.

Increasing the ban time is nifty. Either way, the impression that cheats are spreading like wildfire is a bit blatantly wrong anyway. That's my opinion, at least.

And if Valve is testing VAC on the 1.6 BETA... Well, it means we're closer to the release of 1.6. (Of course, every single day that passes by means we're one day closer to 1.6 being released.) But still, it's nice to see things moving along.

I don't think a 24 hour ban is a good enough deterrant at all. That just gives the person 24 hours to go and find some better cheats that aren't detected.



Sure the penalty goes up each time, but it still gives this person another chance to ruin someone else's fun.



Permanent banning -- now that's a deterrant. It would certainly hinder development of the cheats too.

I like that idea of the ban penalty increase, but as Boris said the 24 hour ban isn't all that great, I personally think it should start larger.

I dont understant why valve gives us vac security pre-updates at all, in my opinion it would be best if they just silently sent vac updates to the servers at any time. Why give the hackers a heads up? But well done with the incremental banning idea valve. keep it up.

Glad to hear it. I have seen more blatant hackers lately then before. I'm talking mouse hops around from one target to the next scoring headshots instantly blatant. No question in the legitimacy of the player. But it's still pretty rare. Also, what ever happened to VAC 2.0. I thought Steam was supposed to have some new stuff for anti cheat?

Finally! I've only seen two or three people cheating in 1.6 as of now, but it's just no fun going to a great server and then having a guy who can headshot your entire team though walls. It's about time though. Can't wait!

I agree with ya'll first infraction should be a week, 2nd? Ban them for life. But of course that usually won't stop them, it makes me feel better though.

well 24 hrs seems good for the first bannign, then it should be a few days, then a week, month etc etc.......
