the shield needs to be impenetrable at all times or in my opinion it's useless. it's bad enough trying to use it in pub, imagine if it stayed the way it was... no one would use it in a scrim/match

thats not true, i have tested this.
Which part do you say isn't true? The strafe bug or the impervious to gunfire otherwise?

Sheesh, Java, I'm really glad VALVe isn't that absolutely stupid. Java is one of the worst creations ever, imho. Screw platform independance, it just isn't useful for most things, especially in the gaming world.

As far as memory dumps go, they can be selective. Take WinXP, for instance. If it ever crashes, you can (before the crash happened) select what sort of memory dump it will do, ranging from complete memory (which creates a file the same size as you have RAM -- typically more than you'd want), down to small Kernel core dumps. My guess is that it'd be a very small memory dump dealing with Steam related files, and perhaps a few other bits about the current software environment. I wouldn't worry about your personal information, though.

        Now onto dealing with RaptorRage.

        You are wrong.

And that concludes that. No, seriously though, the part that we're objecting to is:
Otherwise it's totally impervious to gunfire in all situations.
To be quite honest with you, that's bullshit. I've had, and continue to have, the shield fail on me many times while crouched and holding completely still. It's failed against any rifle and the deagle, though not the other pistols or any SMG's in my experience. I have scouted and AWP'd people in my exact situation, and gotten kills on occasion.

In my experience, the shield is usually impervious while holding still, but not always. It doesn't take a very big error margin before the shield starts looking less and less attractive.

It's fine for you to say a bug exists, if you've experienced and reproduced it. However, just because you haven't seen a different bug does not mean that it doesn't exist. I'm saying now that I've had the shield fail in conditions (completely still and crouched) where it should not have. Because I've experienced this (as have others), you claiming that it isn't true is of course going to sound stupid to us. So stop being so emphatic about it, k?

Sorry to come down so hard on you... :)

Update regarding Steam. Yay, now with Version 5, I crash consistantly every time I try to send a message over Friends. It never crashed before, though on occasion it wouldn't send any more messages. Oh, and receiving an IM while playing a game hung CS, and I had to manually terminate hl.exe from the task manager. I'm really hoping this doesn't persist...

I like the way people assume Valve don't care about the riot shield... I'm sure they (Valve) know it's buggy, and they know it needs to be improved. Judging by the number of updates we've had which are meant to fix it, we can only assume implementing the shield is far harder than originally thought. But look - Valve haven't given up on it yet - they're still working on it. That's why we get updates every week or two. They're as committed to giving us the game they promised as the people here who insist on shouting them down after each update. They're trying their best.

As always, good job Valve, keep going. Steam coded in Java: *LOL* that would have been the best idea ever. Btw, I don't understand ppl complaining about the shield beeing useless. Maybe I'm fps'ly challenged, but I find it difficult to kill a guy who has a shield

the reason for it being "useless" is because of its current buggy state. if and when all the bugs are ironed out, it will probably be very effective.

I don't think it is useless if you know not to strafe with it. YOU CANT SHOOT THROUGH THE WINDOW SHUT THE FUCK UP

I never said it was not true there weren't any other bugs with the shield, I just reported the strafe bug because it was consistent and reproducable. I've also had situations where the shield didn't seem to block anything, but that bug didn't seem to be reproducable because it isn't consistent. When that happens where the shield doesn't seem to work at all I just switched to a different server and it worked fine except for the strafe bug. I assumed the servers with the "standing still" shield problem weren't for whatever reason using the same updated version of Steam or getting the same shield data as the servers where it worked. Or otherwise it seems there are two implementations of the shield, one that doesn't block penetrating guns like the deagle and rifles and one that blocks all the guns. Or perhaps there are hitbox distortion issues with the shield in some cases where the hitboxes are exposed through the shield, but that can't really be seen or tested very well in-game.

Well I was trying to say that I find it quite effective (and thus useful) in its current state, though I never use it myself. :)

ps the shield is good enough as is. It's slightly below the elites on the gimmick scale, but it's effective when used properly.

It appears the problem with shield not working when standing/crouched is occurring just on the 1.6 beta dedicated servers. On the non-dedicated it seems to block fine sans the strafe problem.

wee I used "sans" in a sentence :P
