    Steam Updated

The Steam BETA was updated to fix some stability issues and add some debugging output. Here is what Erik Johnson had to say:
We've released a new version of the desktop component of Steam. This release addresses a number of stability issues with Friends and Steam in general. If you restart Steam now you will receive this update.

This version of Steam will generate debugging information if Steam crashes. If you get an assert when running Steam (it will manifest as a Windows style dialogue box with Abort/Retry/Ignore buttons), please check your hard drive for files that have extensions of .mdmp. If it did generate one of these files, please e-mail them to me (erik@valvesoftware.com), with a brief description of what you were doing when it occurred.
So... start up Steam and update that platform.dll to version 5, everyone is doing it. It's clearly the 'in' thing to do.

Update: There has been another update to Steam since this was originally posted. No changelog was given. The current platform version number is 6.

its seems like valve is focusing primarily on steam application issues (rather than cs specific ones) - at least on the last two updates. Does this mean they are finished tweaking cs? I hope not, they better fix the riot shield, as of now it's obsolete because rifle fire goes through it (I'm not even sure if this is a bug or if rifles penetrate the glass or if that was just a rumor). Anyone know?

The problem with the shield is that it doesn't block gunfire when the shield user strafes left or right (or any 2-key diagonal combination involving left/right strafing). Otherwise it's totally impervious to gunfire in all situations.

There have been like 5 updates since the beta was released. It has been pretty much Steam updates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and those were followed up on Fridays with a CS update. I'm guessing if the pattern holds there may be a CS update again this weekend. In any case they need to fix the shield and a clipping problem on aztec with one of the boxes allowing players to walk into it.

if you check the update history you would see that cs was updated on the 12th .. only a week ago.

For those paranoid (and interested) ones, it looks like those .mdmp are memory dump files (I believe they are coding Steam in Java? Correct me if I'm wrong). Those are great to find out how exactly you got that crash to occur, but it could also show steam programmers your open kiddie porn windows. Just a word to the wise (I'm not even a BETA member, I'll just wait).

Wouldn't a memory dump show all open processes?
