Narby Announces Work On New Map

Narby posted on his site that he has started a new map, de_quarry. There is no word on when it may be finished or if it might be submitted for consideration in a future version of Counter-Strike.
It's just a shell right now, very very basic architecture and layout, certainly nothing even close to final but a start none the less. Here are a couple of screenshots, note that it's still very early and may or may not be set at night. We'll see how things develop.

Those early screenshots show the architecture, but they show nothing as far as what the final lighting will be like or any quarry machinery and equipment that might be in the actual release. Check out his site and you can read all of what the narbster has to say about de_quarry himself.

Looks different. I can't wait, I love narby's work. Airstrip is the only new map out of all the ones added that I like (the ones from 1.4 and 1.5).

Just bear in mind there is NO actual lighting in those shots, the light you do see is just to show up the architecture, and in no way part of the final map.

Just playing with some stuff, It could be a lot of fun shotting from the gravel converyors and running around the crushing plants.

do you mind me asking when you are going to release de_comrade, it seems whenever we start discussing narbys new maps, they seem to take forever for the community to get its anxious hands on it and be able to play it.

I think narby said he was going to release comrade after 1.6 was officially released. I think people will probably still want to play it then, unlike when Mojo announced militia_2k over a year in advance and waited until nobody cared anymore before he released it.

Did people really like comrade that much?I mean i'll release it after 1.6, but i'm not sure where all the hype surrounding it came from.

i think its just cause your previous work has always been highly recieved and used in CAL and all official matches. so when we see you have a new one comming out we get excited, plus CSN helps pump it up. i think one of the biggest factors was that everyone was looking foreward to it and then it got pulled. so everyone just got teased. just some thoughts.

on quarry, i think the slanted inclosed walkway looks very "fun" and different for a map, if this map isnt ever finished or used i hope to see that archetecture or idea somewhere else. keep up the good work

I've played comrade and I just remember liking the choke points and the way the bomb sites weren't too far apart.

I think the hype came from the whole "name narby's map which might be in the next version of CS" contest. Plus everyone loves at least one of aztec, inferno, vertigo, and thunder.

Once I played comrade, it's ok..

Sadly it won't be too popular, because it's not in the 'CPL mapcycle'(rename it to de_clan3_comrade! :P), and not fun as iceworld.

Narby I tried a version of comrade that someone sent me, not sure if it was your final product and I must say i thought It played great in small and large games. I've played it since on several servers and I think it brings the same kind of strategy or working together that the Mill and Fire bring. You really should convince CPL to accept it as a CPL map cause that would really help with the circulation since it is about 5mbs total.

Comrade isn't bad, it's just a bit bland to the eyes imho. Good layout though. I guess I'm just reminded a bit too much of nuke's downstairs look, which serves its purpose, but how exciting can you make concrete? I still value layout over aesthetics, and the custom CPL maps seem to do the same. So who knows, maybe it could find acceptance there.

Anyway, as far as this new map goes, my only suggestion would be to see how "active" you can make the map. Most maps have sort of an unmoving, dead feeling to them. I don't know what all the entity limits and such are when you're creating maps, as obviously I'm not a mapper, but having stuff actively going on around you would add a lot to the feeling, I think. Get that rock crusher actually crushing rocks! :)
