And Blankster, Activision wouldn't do anything to the graphics, they're simply publishing, not developing.
Yeah... so they really don't have that much on an impact on the game....

So I don't see why it's such a big deal. It's still Valve who's the developer.... Sierra, Activision... they're just publishers...

    What's the big deal?

            ? please elaborate...
If Activision wants the game out on a specific date, which Valve has some trouble with, the publisher isn't going to suffer, only the quality.

I've played many Activision games and they all pretty much sucked, they better not screw up CS.

Activision is not making the game, they are publishing it.

SO back to my question again. What's the big deal who publishes the game? Do publishers really affect the game that much?

like sum1 said. rareware was a top quality game making company. Now where are they?

Activision had better not shut valve down or re-name it. valve brought us half-life and it will be a great shame if they sell out 2 a company who dosent even release good games anymore

Also i hope they dont use the unreal engine and make a nu half-life engine for cs2. We dont want another rubbish half-assed-over-demanding-engine 2 spoil another good game. i want 2 see half-life 2 engine as i will be annoyed if we use the unreal engine so half the people cant use that game

                        cus of system spc

LOL People thought Dynamix was a bad company atleast they pumped out a game and support and get shut down. Valve hasn't released anything of real value for some time except rehash mods they never made. So to me valve should now be called leech inc.

Funny you should mention Dynamix... that will play into my comments.

Dynamix was the software group that made Starsiege Tribes, and more recently its sequel Tribes 2. When Tribes 2 was released, it was awesome, but plagued by errors. It was nearly a year before all the major bugs were worked out of the game. Dynamix took a lot of flak from gamers for releasing an unfinished game.

As it turned out, it was Sierra putting the squeeze on the programmers to release it on their PR timetable, without regards to when the product was actually ready to ship. So can a publisher have a serious effect on the game? Hell yes, and that could be good or bad, depending on their decisions.

Most people don't seem to realize the dual purpose of a publisher. Sure, the publisher boxes the game up and distributes it, and keeps a notable margin of the profit. But the other reason for having a publisher from the get-go is for the starting capital. If you're going to make a game over the course of 3 years, you need the funds for your offices, the employees, hardware, etc... and that's a serious chunk of change.

VALVe is likely able to fund their own development efforts from the profits they've made from HL and it's published mods. They needed Sierra to get them going in the first place, however. Who knows how much Activision will be giving them to develop their further games, or what sort of deal is going on? With Steam being a way of cutting the publisher out, there's got to be some different agreements than one would typically expect. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
