Activision and Valve shake hands

Big news in the gaming/business sense. It has been officially announced that Activision and VALVe have joined forces. Activision will now have exclusive rights to publish upcoming PC games by VALVe. Under the agreement, the WW2 mod "Day of Defeat" will become a retail game just as our beloved Counter-Strike did.

Santa Monica, CA -- April 4, 2003 -- Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Valve, L.L.C. jointly announced today a strategic partnership that grants Activision exclusive worldwide publishing rights to upcoming games created by the premiere PC game developer. The multi-title agreement underscores Activision's commitment to partner with top development talent and will expand the company's PC portfolio.

Why you may ask is this news related to Counter-Strike? Well we already know that Counter-Strike: Condition Zero will be published by Sierra however this move may signal that Counter-Strike 2 will now become an Activision published game.



Read the full press release and give us your own opinion. My own view is that this may be a trigger for VALVe to announce a break off from Sierra after Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is released. Sierra may be upset at VALVe's push with Steam which might cause a loss in revenue to the publisher.



Who knows maybe PunkBuster will even come back into CS?

Activision is a good company with many good titles and a long history to it's name. This should only be for the better, in my opinion, for the games and their quality.

Kind of really unimportant...Doesn't relate to CS1.6 or when it will be finished. I feel sorry for Activision though. ValVe sucks for the most part. They can't even finish 1.6 in a reasonable amount of time and release betas throuh....steam *snicker*. What idiots.....

Activision publishes bad games nowadays, while Sierra always had quality titles. I'm not particularly inclined to a CS2, because it will eat up more graphics power, and all the new FPS sucks. CS owns all.

Don't be foo... CS 1.6 is more than finished (notice, theres no noticeable updates in steam on last weeks)... I't's been delayed just for schedule purposes... Prolly they want to release DoD 1.0/Retail CS1.6 and HL 1.1.1.1 at the same time...

Hey, remember when we all though Activision was going to purchase Rareware, but Mirocosoft did instead? Who needs Rareware now?



Also, I wonder what this means for CS on consoles. We all know Activision is a multi-console developer, and since PS2 also has an online service, we might have two console versions.
