One of the articles describes an empty HL map, before texturing, as featuring walls and floors with a completely "orange hue."
the picture of the jail with the yellow walls will most likely not be implemented into the final release.
I take it from this description that the picture circulating with the orange walls is actually from a spec map, populated with minimal amounts of textures (just the gate) and a few enemies and friendlies.Comment

From the sounds of things they have spend 4 years on the engine and done 10000's of spec maps to test 'gameplay' ideas. and it seems they only just started putting the ideas that work together in September 2002...
Been talking about DNF and 3d realms with a mate, i bet they are shitting themselfs about half-life 2, spending how many years on it now? to make a great game that will get 'game of the year' and change the way games are made then something like this comes along....looks like half-life 2 will get 'game of the year' for 2003 and 2004.
DNF in 2005 anyone?Comment

This is all true. Quote from PCG: "Half-Life 2s level designers begin by creating an "orange map," an un-arted, untextured level on which they can test gameplay and finalize architecture before turning it over to artists for texturing."
