    cpoint: all-mod

Another issue of Counter-Point graces your Wednesday afternoon. This time, asspennies and I talk about Half-Life 2 and mods. As per usual, we ramble on about some random subjects as well. Here's something I said while in a drunken stupor:
Half-Life 2's biggest segue to success will be Half-Life's current popularity. HL2 will get tons of press coverage and hundreds of thousands of gamers are going to buy the title simply because it will be a damn mod train. It's bound to be. Mod developers will think that gamers will be there to play their mods, and gamers will think that mods will be there to be used by gamers.

I know your eye sockets have probably collapsed at that paradox, but it's true. PC gaming hasn't had a long history. We certainly can't find patterns. Something like Half-Life has never happened before. Whatever we say will just be a baseless prediction. So you should probably skip over what I have to say and go back to photographing your headset every 24 hours so you can have the definitive evidence that will once and for all prove that aliens are inside your room and are moving stuff while you sleep.
Check it out and keep the discussion going by posting on the comments page.

Have an idea for what we should discuss in a future issue of Counter-Point? Tell asspennies!

i like this CP stuff, its like, an actual long article. read some of the stuff on gotfrag to see what i mean.

doom 3 is going to ship with multiplayer, just not like, q3 style multiplayer. it's going to be based on a P2P system, which is probably going to slow it down a bit, plus it is only initially supporting like 4 players, and you need to join b4 the game starts.

oh yeah, im not buying hl2 until cs2 comes with it/comes out

Was it just me or did this have next to nothing to do with mods? And also I feel the reason that Deus Ex was not as poplular as it should have been was that the graphics were too dark and jaggie and almost hurt your eye's.

Yea I think valve needs to make sure both CS2 and TF2 somehow are incorporated as addons for HL2. They need to keep the mod community on HL2 and not have it branch out to the other games. With 3 separate games on the same engine running around out there competing for a mod dev and player base you're going to run in to trouble.

I agree that TF2 and CS2 should be with HL2. TF and CS are the only reason HL is still around IMO. When a mod has over 15,000 servers and HL has about 15 that I can find, it's the mod that is popular not the game.

You're always old enough to drink. Now, to drink legally, that's another issue.

I personally think that VALVe will not lose on this bet. Not only have they kept something this huge successfully under wraps, but they've also been creating a quality game. Granted, five years under development, they had better not produce crap but some companies seem to produce nothing but. As much as they've invested into it, I don't really think they can lose.

People will buy it because it looks good graphically, because it's the new game on the shelves and mostly, because it's Half-Life. I bet that 90% of the sales will be simply because it's the second game. I don't really care what my friends or game review magazines think of it, I plan to buy it the second it hits the store shelves.

The point I'm trying to make is that with Half-Life 1, VALVe strove for quality. I firmly believe they will do the same thing with Half-Life 2 and will settle for nothing less. I can only hope that they squash as many bugs as they can before shoving it out the door. Nothing angers me more than half completed work with a price tag slapped on it.
